FURY and despair gripped New Orleans yesterday as America stood accused of abandoning hurricane victims in their shattered city.

Sixty thousand were STILL trying to flee the flood hell four days after the storm that brought mayhem.

Rampaging gangs of armed looters continued to wreak terror hahaha8212; with little sign of promised troops.

One witness to the horrors demanded: hahaha8220;Where are they? There are corpses on the street being eaten by rats.

hahaha8220;I mean, this is the United States of America.hahaha8221;

President George Bush yesterday flew to the hurricane-hit Gulf Coast hahaha8212; as US senator David Vitter claimed there were at least 10,000 dead in the state of Louisiana alone.

Mr Bush hahaha8212; facing a storm of his own over his governmenthahaha8217;s handling of the disaster hahaha8212; admitted: hahaha8220;The results are not acceptable.hahaha8221;

But he vowed: hahaha8220;Where ithahaha8217;s not working right, wehahaha8217;re going to make it right.hahaha8221;

As he spoke the first convoy of aid carrying food and water finally arrived in New Orleans.

A line of military vehicles hahaha8212; with soldiers riding shotgun to protect the precious cargo hahaha8212; churned through the floodwaters to the convention centre.

Meanwhile New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin, who has ordered a total evacuation, issued a desperate SOS.

He raged in a radio interview: hahaha8220;I need reinforcements, I need troops, I need 500 buses!

hahaha8220;Now get off your asses and fix this. Lethahaha8217;s do something and lethahaha8217;s fix the biggest goddam crisis in the history of this country.

hahaha8220;Get every bus in the country and get the **** to New Orleans.hahaha8221;

He described the streets of the once-proud jazz capital as resembling hahaha8220;the Third Worldhahaha8221;.

Cursing, yelling and ultimately breaking down in tears, he blasted the federal government.

The mayor ranted: hahaha8220;You mean to tell me in a place where thousands are dying every day, we cannot figure out a way to sort this out?hahaha8221;

Across his ruined city, lawlessness continued to spiral out of control. Gun battles broke out between looters and troops.

Michael Brown, director of Americahahaha8217;s disaster organisation the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said his teams were trying to work hahaha8220;under conditions of urban warfarehahaha8221;.

One tourist, who asked a cop for help, was told: hahaha8220;Go to hell. Ithahaha8217;s every man for himself.hahaha8221;

Many exhausted officers desperate to get back to their own loved ones have simply turned in their badges.

At the cityhahaha8217;s Charity Hospital hahaha8212; where corpses lay piled up in corridors hahaha8212; medics told how they had been shot at.

Doctor Tyler Curiel said he ran a gauntlet of bullets after taking patients to an evacuation area.

He added: hahaha8220;A guy in a white shirt started firing at us.hahaha8221;

He was saved by National Guard troops hahaha8212; who later ordered hospital staff to stay away from windows when more gunfire erupted outside.

Coastguard Lieutenant Commander Cheri Ben-Iesan said: hahaha8220;Hospitals are trying to evacuate.

hahaha8220;At every one of them there are reports that as the helicopters come in, people are shooting at them.

Rescue teams were having to battle armed looters as they tried to reach people trapped in the flooded city among corpses.

Sniper cops were stationed on the roof of their HQ after gun thugs began brazenly walking into police stations and firing. Carjackings, robberies and rapes were reported across the city. Conditions at the Superdome stadium, where 30,000 have taken refuge as they await evacuation by bus, were hellish.

Hungry and thirsty people queued up to leave beside piles of dead bodies. Terry Ebbert, head of New Orleans Emergency Operations, said: hahaha8220;This is a national disgrace.hahaha8221;

One refugee died and at least ten more were hurt when a bus taking them from the Superdome overturned on a highway.

At the Convention Centre frustration boiled over among the 20,000 packed inside hahaha8212; and there were even reports of gangs killing BABIES so they could take their places on rescue boats.

Police chief Eddie Compass sent in 88 officers to try to calm the angry mob at the Centre hahaha8212; but his men were beaten back.

He said: hahaha8220;We have individuals who are getting raped, we have individuals who are getting beaten.Tourists are walking in that direction and they are getting preyed upon.hahaha8221;

As the first aid arrived, thousands of National Guard troops were also pouring into Louisiana hahaha8212; with almost 50,000 expected in New Orleans in days.
