:thumbsup yep

"Nagin said he needs military troops to provide security and 500 buses to take people stranded by Hurricane Katrina out of the city.

So far, he said, the promises are unfulfilled.

"I keep hearing that it's coming. This is coming. That is coming. My answer to that is B.S. Where is the beef?" "

thats sad

He'll get a lot of respect from the people of NO.. and i think they'll see through any kind of smear campaign played against him when this is finished(which wont be for a very long time)

I don't think he is ruining his career. He is just looking through his eyes and
speaking from his heart. The whole world is watching how this unfolds....it will
be interesting to see how GW is going to backpaddle out of this mess....but
that's for later.........first things first save as many peeps as possible.

Whatever hasn't been done in the past few days should be done right now......

benc 09-02-2005 08:22 AM

The problem is then when the military is brought in and kills these people, people will whine and say how America is a police state, and another Waco, etc.

Its really a cant win situation. This mayer is just trying to save his street crediblity.

dready 09-02-2005 08:34 AM

The Mayor is going to be re-elected for an eternity after this.

Rinaldo 09-02-2005 08:37 AM

Yeah his career is over, but he's my favorite politician for the day

Reelected as mayor of what? There wont be much left of New Orleans

I think he's right to speak from the heart, I agree with him 100%

sean416 09-02-2005 10:05 AM

"one of the public briefings we had they was talking about getting public school bus drivers down here and bus these people outta here. I'm like, you gotta be kidding me? This is a national disaster - get every dog gone greyhound bus line in the country, and get they ass moving down to new orleans! They thinkin small, and this is a major major major deal. and I cant emphasize it enough. this is crazy"

I feel his frustration.

badmunchkin 09-02-2005 10:09 AM

Great speech

Sin 09-02-2005 10:16 AM

AWESOME speech, just too bad he had to get to this point before the President FINALLY admitted that the relief efforts are unacceptable

FuqALot 09-02-2005 10:17 AM

It's really really sad that this is happening. Katrina was already a bitch, but how GW is handling the situation is even worse.

Mayor Ray Nagin is in fact, a regular guy.

He quit his 400k a year job to become mayor and make 100k.

He has a cale exec, and is just a normal US citizen standing up to currupt politics in new orleans.

THAT is why he tells it like it is, its because he is not a politician. His credentials are impressive, and he is a smart man.

Quote:

He's not a politician, not really. Nagin, 49, was a cable TV executive at Cox Communications, a man with no previous political experience, when he beat out 14 candidates to win election as mayor in 2002. Back then, he was a fresh face in New Orleans politics, a young guy with a shaved head who promised to clean up a corrupt city.

"The mayor is a very confident, very levelheaded person," says Hutchinson. "He's not one to react on a personal level. He's not panicky."
Quote:

"He stays very calm under fire, and he stays very focused," City Council member Jackie Clarkson, mother of actress Patricia Clarkson, told the AP. "Through all the demands coming at him from different directions, he's stayed very focused on human life."

Nagin was born in 1956 in New Orleans's Charity Hospital, one of the hospitals that have now run out of food and water and been besieged by looters. His mother worked at a lunch counter in a Kmart. His father worked two jobs -- a fabric cutter in a clothing factory by day, a custodian at City Hall at night.

A hotshot pitcher in high school, Nagin went to Tuskegee University on a scholarship, graduating in 1978 with an accounting degree. He worked for General Motors in Detroit, then for financial services companies in Los Angeles and Dallas. In 1982 he married a childhood friend, Seletha Smith. Three years later, Nagin was hired by Cox and he and Seletha returned to New Orleans, where they raised two sons, Jeremy and Jarin, and a daughter, Tianna. He was making about $400,000 a year when he was elected mayor, a job that paid $110,000.
very humble way to achieve success.

his dad was janitor in city hall, now his son is mayor.

people like him imspire generations.
