Ashamed
 

Today for the first time in my life, I'm ashamed to be an American.

I turned on the TV tonight to see American citizens laying dead on the street as people walked by. Was this downtown Beirut? No, just a major American city.

I see it take days to get National Guard to New Orleans. However, when a lady in Florida who is brain dead is about to die, we call special sessions of congress on a Sunday and have National Guard there in hours to settle the situation.

We are getting aid to people in Iraq and Afghanistan but have people in our own fucking country dying on the streets from dehydration and starvation.
The world despises us and half of them are laughing in our faces. These are the same people that we are "liberating". These are the same people we are helping rebuild their country while our country falls apart and our soldiers can't even get equipment to protect ourselves.

We have oil companies dicks so far in our ass that we can't find alternative sources of energy. We rely so much on gas that our economy goes to shit the second something threatens our oil supply. Our "leaders" won't do anything because of fear of not getting that hefty contribution from OPEC.

Then the people. One of the worst natural disasters in our nations history takes place and we have people looting for plasma TVs? We have people raping citizens in fucking homeless shelters we've set up to protect them? We have people shooting at our fucking rescue crews? Am I in Libya or the United States? I can't imagine human beings not having the compassion to help one another out. Are Nikes worth more than saving hundreds of lives?

Things won't change. We'll lose thousands of lives and rebuild the city to another disaster waiting to happen. Things will be done half ass so we can make sure we have our billions in Iraq so that shits like Cheney can give his Halliburton friends a handjob. We care more about some shit middle eastern country than our own. We are building schools in Iraq and closing them here.

I am as patriotic as the next, and I would never leave or turn my back on this country. But today, I'm ashamed to be an American.
