I know helicopters and rescuers are being shot at and whatever other stupid acts are going on down there... but why are they not dropping crates of food and supplies on the ground? Sure there's water everywhere, but there are a few dry spots and the people would grab it all before it ever hits the ground anyway. This is ridiculous! These people have no food or water!! :Oh crap

No - they could not. People are animals there. They will take it all at gunpoint. This is like throwing one banana into a group of 20,000 apes. What do you think would happen?

In this particular case I hate to say it but the above opinion is one I would tend to agree with. Food and aid must be distributed under armed supervision. Dropped crates would cause a lot of those people to tear each other apart.
