SAN DIEGO -- The creator and several buyers of a computer program designed to allow jealous lovers to snoop on their sweethearts' online activities have been indicted for allegedly violating federal computer privacy laws.

Carlos Enrique Perez-Melara, 25, was indicted Friday on 35 counts of manufacturing, sending and advertising a surreptitious interception device and unauthorized access to protected computers.

The Loverspy program, disguised as an electronic greeting card showing images of puppies and flowers, was sent as an e-mail. When it was executed, it would begin recording victims' e-mail messages and the Web sites they visited, prosecutors said. The information would be transmitted to computers operated by Perez-Melara and relayed to customers, authorities said.

"It was marketed as a way to catch a cheating lover," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Mitch Dembin.

Four people who bought the program, sold online for $89, were indicted on two counts each of illegal computer hacking. Each count carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000. Authorities said others were charged in Texas, Hawaii, North Carolina and Missouri.

Dembin said as many as 1,000 copies of Loverspy may have been sold worldwide.

Perez-Melara could face up to 175 years in prison if convicted.

american pervert 08-31-2005 09:14 PM

Slap Dot 08-31-2005 09:14 PM

Babagirls 08-31-2005 09:17 PM

what people wont do to try to catch their lovers cheating.

hint: if you think that your lover is cheating, think that they very well COULD be cheating, or dont trust them, you shouldnt be with them.

Bobby_the_pyn 08-31-2005 09:17 PM

Holy shit! I guess it doesnt pay to catch cheaters anymore. Sounds like another case where it sux to be smart.

sumphatpimp 08-31-2005 09:18 PM

Perez-Melara could face up to 175 years in prison if convicted.

he will spend a year or 2 in a rest home and get out and diappear, to later be found working for a computer security company.
they always do.

Paraskass 08-31-2005 09:23 PM

why is this illegal but hiring a private detective to spy on your partner not?

how about that show "cheaters"?
if it is real what makes it "legal"?

then 90% of current relationships should break up, lol. sometimes when people get burned by one person they worry it will happen again. and often times it does. just look at porn. i bet at least 60% of the guys these girls are with know nothing about what they do. can you really trust anyone?

beemk 08-31-2005 09:24 PM

damn that sucks, i was reading the thread hoping they busted some spyware auto installer virus bullshit and did this to make an example out of them. these guys were pretty stupid to do this out in the open though.

very true I was think the same thing when I opened it .

mrthumbs 08-31-2005 09:28 PM

wow.. if it was spyware or a spam tool that would make a tiny bit sense..

Compared to the other stuff you see on the net daily and is accepted im sure the people selling and buying wouldnt even link criminal investigation to this let alone these heavy sentences.

This IS "some spyware auto installer virus bullshit"!

Just because it's supposed to be used on "lovers" doesn't make it "better".

This is some despicible shit. I heard on the radio earlier that you could turn on users web cams remotely, take snapshots of their screen at any interval desired, track all IM messages, etc. and have all that shit emailed to you or this guys service and forwarded to you.

This is pretty fuckin' bad shit!

yeah but i wouldnt put it on the same level. you're comparing someone whos auto installing spyware because you visited a website to someone who is only selling software that violates privacy but not installing it on anyones machine. i think they're both bad, but not on the same level.

It's EXACTLY what he's doing but the "purchaser of his software" initiates the act.

His spyware worked by making a purchase - going to the members area of HIS site and sending a greeting card to the person you want to infect.

They go to his site to open the greeting card and their comuter is basically hacked.

Pretty malicious and he's directly involved.

They need to go after the real makers of spyware, not people trying to spy on lovers

Just because the purpose is to spy on lovers, what makes you think that the software wasn't used by people to spy on business competitors? Checking thier emails, contact lists, conversations with clients?

C'mon now - be realistic.

:winkwink:
