Katrina like storm and Tampa FL

I know we are very do to get hit by a major hurricane. I have a house in St Pete FL and after seeing the devistation in NO, I wonder what Tampa/St Pete would be like after a direct hit as we are basically a pininsula of a pininsula. I know some of you guys live in this area do you think we could go through the same shit as NO? Alot of poor folks in ST Pete and after the riots a few years ago, I think its a recipe for disaster.

I keep all storms away from Tampa. I do not allow them here. Look at last year.

This area is not below sea level, so while we would get the storm surge destruction on the shore and the wind damage, I don't think we would have wide-spread flooding like New Orleans is seeing.

Lucky last year. Just a matter of time and I dont think people realize
how simular an impact we could have as NO. St Pete is just looking for
a reason to off.

Exactly... although they say if a hurrican was to come up through the Gulf of Mexico into the mouth of Tampa Bay, then the city could possibly be under 25+ feet of water due to the surge

They were talking about this on the radio earlier today. They did some imaging of what different water levels would do. A similar hit like Katrina to New Orleans would devastate this area. Downtown Tampa would be flooded. St. Pete would be underwater, only an island of land would remain.

crazy stuff to think about.

Remember, Biloxi and Gulfport both had storm surges of 25 feet. That water receeded right after the storm, and only went inland a mile or so. New Orleans, however, is a giant bowl... there's nowhere for the water to go.

I dont even want to think about it ... we've been VERY lucky.
