What's better to turn off your computer each night or leave it on?
If you leave it on then it's hot in the morning.
If you shut it down then it has to go through the boot up process and can cause ware. |
I have been turning it off after each use for years..I have no problems.I do it also as a preventative from potential hacks. You never know what this spyware shit does
I leave mine on... I have noticed a higher power bill though. :\
off, because 8+ hours is alot each day if you turn your computer off.. hardware will last longer for sure.
I never turn them off.
meh.. I leave mine on, but I don't think it matters eitherway..

A guy that owns a big computer chain store here (good friends of my parents) told me to leave it on . So I'm leaving it on . |
remote desktop dosent seem to work well if the computer is off..
If you leave it on, it will cause less stress on the components (no constant expanding from heating up/cooling down). The only downside of leaving it on all the time is higher electricity bill and a dustier interior.
the worst thing you can do to electronics is turn them off and on
I agree, always on :thumbsup
I leave my desktop on but shut down my laptop, it's too hot in the morning if I never shut it down.
laptop ... I have to turn it off to bring it home
i dont shot down for monthes both laptop and the desktop one
The boot-up process (I heard and read) hasn't had much wear and tear on a computer for years. It's far better to save the power bill and let the poor thing cool down for a few hours than keep it on to save a bit of wear and tear. Do you leave your car running all night, too? :) I know it's extreme, but still...

Leaving it on is better.
I usually shut them down, but leaving them on will not hurt them either. But reboot almost every day.
on: due to the sheer fact the hum of the fan soothes me to sleep..

I've got two computers right now. One is five years old and the other 1 year old. Both have been on since purchase without problem. I reboot once every 3 or 4 days.
I keep mine on all the time. For those who say they turn it off because of hackers why not just diable you network connection? hackers can't get you if you're not connected.
higher electricity bill? I pay my own electricity and my pc barely uses anything. |
all 10 of mine have been running 24-7 for god knows how long
I leave mine on cause I like getting up in the morning and having everything ready to go.
Desktop computer were made to be used 8-12 hours per day.
If you guys want to leave your computer on 24 hours a day you should consider getting a server instead. |

business is business. :2 cents: anyways, i turn mine off every night. if im not on it, it doesnt need to be on. and no, it doesnt wear & tear on a machine. i've had other machines last years with no problems and i always shut down at night. |

it's not good for electronics to be booted and turned off, even stereos now days have sleep mode :winkwink: |
my PC has been on 24/7 since i bought it in Jan 2002.
a computer draws the power of basically a few lightbulbs, i think you all will be all right with the power bill
I never turn my machine off. It's just more convenient to leave it on all the time. I set all the power saving features to on though. So the HD's spin down and everything.
.. and on a related note. I have never had a computer conk out on me yet. :thumbsup |
I give mine a rest every 2 weeks. I think that's a good compromise.
I leave mine on, but turn off access to the net from my cable modem while I'm asleep.
put it in "sleep" mode every night...
I usually turn it off after use to save electricity... :)
I turn it off...never had a problem
think of all the wasted electricity |
I keep it on cause its cold in my home and I have no central heating
Depends on how often you use it. The one I use all day everyday stays on 24/7 except when Im ooo. The one I use for video editing stays off except for when I'm editing video. My laptop stay off till I'm travelling etc. If you use it everyday most of the day leave it on to minimize wear and tear on the switch. If you only use it for 1-4 hours a day or less then turn it off to minimize wear and tear on the whole system.
i only turn off my computer on weekends.
it's especially good to leave them on if you have a high humidity

I never turn off my pc..
I find if I leave my laptop on hybernate a few days in a row, it's a mess and as slow as hell and the fan seems to work over time. I mix it up a bit. I guess I should work from my desk top as appose to the laptop, but I am just so use to it!
We have high humidity here so I try to leave mine ON.
However, I try to shut them down during major storms, for fear of lightning. |

i read somewhere that that SURGE of turning a computer on uses more power than leaving it on all the time.
so since then.. i never turn my crackmachine off. |
I like turning it off and on over and over again :winkwink: I turn it off every night :thumbsup
I keep my laptop on, i just close it and it hibernates.
I never turn them off, unless mother nature does it for me
