Other people up here in Canada I've asked seem to laugh or brush aside the idea that I want to travel to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast area to help with cleanup efforts.

Help me get there. Willing to trade gfx design or good writing skills for a trip down south ASAP.

Admittedly, I'm broke. I went to the Red Cross today but volunteering from up here is too difficult.

Help me! Some fellow webmasters might be trapped down there.

Anyway, New Orleans is off limits at the moment... CNN called it "a wilderness" at this point, filled with poisons, snakes and other various creatures that can be harmful.

the city is dead and unliveable. Who knows when it will become a working city again. The government has made it clear that EVERYONE EVERYONE EVERYONE MUST MUST MUST leave New Orleans. Its not a city anymore.

you cant go to new orleans. The governor announced 2 hours ago the city is no longer a city and now the entire city must be evacuated including the superdome and other shelters.

The money that you spend to get down there could be donated to the cause. If you really wanted to help & your main concern wasn't ego, that's what you'd do.

Spending money to go down there to do what? Where will you stay? If you're honest, it's a selfish way to make yourself feel good about your actions.

Well first off, the red cross has to do something with that money. like buy the equipment and supplies, help the destitute, etc. It's not as if they just give the funds way for the reconstruction effort - hardworking people have to be on the ground getting things done.

Just donating money (of which i have none, im broke) is the easy short term payoff. But in the urban areas, there needs to be people on the ground, reassuring and helping others cope, dissuading looters, etc, etc..

There is a war in Iraq. There are only so many national guard troops. I do not believe a strong set of hands will be turned away.

The Bush administration is sending in the Marines to "cleanup". That means remove dead bodies, live bodies, looters and the like. They started today with blackhawks and amphibious vehicles are on the way. I suspect that some regular armed forces are gonna be handling some of the real dirty work.

Expect martial law anytime now if they haven't done so yet.

Some hard stuff to deal with:

Collect and ID bodies that died during the storm and after.

ID bodies that were buried and aren't anymore.

Plant or cremate the dead.

Decontaminate the city (Giant bottle of bleach?) to make it safe enough for citizen volunteers, contractors and the rest..

Other areas with less damage will have work available sooner.
