BREAKING: Audubon aquarium (N.O.) leveled - sharks loose!

Just saw it on cnn. Apparently the aquarium is right along the river near the levee that broke. The shark tank is shattered and they don't know where the sharks are. :1orglaugh

haven't heard anything about this... I loved that aquarium

Greg B 08-30-2005 01:30 PM

Sharks can live in fresh water. Just last week they caught a shark in a lake. Some wiseass dumped it there.

Sharks PREFER salt water, Even in the Hudson River we would catch a shark every now and then. Usually small ones though but a good sized one would get snagged like once every 20 years.

Thee Johnclave 08-30-2005 01:46 PM

Bull Shark have been found in freshwater rivers in Africa and up the Mississippi.

wiseguys-nate 08-30-2005 01:49 PM

Maybe I'm missing something but why is the flood water freshwater and not saltwater?

Lake Ponchartrain is fed by the gulf and is salt water, so the only freshwater source would be the rain, which only accounts for a small amount of the flooding.

MetaMan 08-30-2005 01:51 PM

yes sharks love to swim in gas, chemical and fecies contaminated water.

loverboy 08-30-2005 01:55 PM

no wonder more than 60 are dead :(

:smokin

Jarmusch 08-30-2005 01:56 PM

Someone will probably loot the dead sharks and make a profit from them.

The water is 20+ ft deep in some areas, that would dilute the shit out of any chemicals and gasoline and water don't mix, so that's not an issue.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that some pretty nasty sea creatures are cruising around suburban streets right now.

Yes in fact. There probably isnt much outflow to the sea from the flooded areas. Give it a week and it will start to stagnate. THATS when the fun starts.

Edit: They caught a tiger shark in the mississippi a few years back.

johnnyhey 08-30-2005 03:14 PM

New Orleans Aquarium, Zoo escape Hurricane Katrina
mongabay.com
August 30, 2005

The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans apparently survived Hurricane Katrina relatively unscathed according to a report in The Baltimore Sun. Hurricane Katrina hit the Louisiana city Monday.

According to Ron Forman, president of the Audubon Nature Institute that oversees the city's aquarium and zoo, only a few flamingos died and was little other loss of animal life. The Audubon Zoo also fared well in the storm.

Located along the banks of the Mississippi River in the historic French Quarter, the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas has some 10,000 animals and is considerd one of the world's foremost aquariums.

The French Quarter of New Orleans, built on the highest ground in the city, suffered less damage than other neighborhoods.

Widespread power outages have disabled the Audubon Nature Institute and Audubon Aquarium of the Americas web sites.

In neighboring Mississippi, the fate of a group of dolphins moved to Gulfport is unknown. According to The Daily Telegraph, the animals were last seen in a hotel swimming pool, but the storm left the town of 70,000 people under 10 feet (3m) of water

Crazy shit. I wonder if they'll survive to become the fresh water sharks of New Orleans.

That was a joke.

Anyone know how many hours they knew there was a good chance / that the hurricane was going to hit certain regions?

abandon new orleans, get rid of the levies. Turn it into lake new orleans and a resort area. lol. Seriously if they rebuild the city and all itll just flood again. Natural disasters get worse every year.
