Something I dont understand about AdSense/AdWords
 

Why are people who own online stores using these ads on there sites?

They just show ads for other stores, and not only that, they are showing stores that sell the same product as you!

Its like AFF putting up a big ad for SexSearch on their free profile sign-up page.

Dumb idea!

Im sure some of it is unintentional. There's a feature in AdSense to turn off competitors' ads. Quick fix.

However, if it IS intentional, maybe some of those sites get a lot of traffic and may have THIN margins on some products that it makes sense to show competitors' ads. I'm not exactly sure but that's one reason some stores might do it.

some are just fake store fronts used for rankings. Others that sell things like dvd/cd's can make more getting paid per click than they would from an affiliate program.

If someone isn't gonna buy from you there is no harm in linking them elsewhere. You know that insurance company that gives you rates from multiple companies, you can believe they get a cut for each customer they send with 0 risk involved.

Good point. I argued not long ago that AdSense didn't make sense (no pun intended. okay, intended) for most sites esp. if you are a landing page or an affiliate. Obviously, some products/services would make more sense get PPC then PPS or revshare.

I promote adsense on my non adult sites promoting competitors sites. Let me tell you that the reason people are doing this is because it works and brings in $$$. No bullshit. And you know the money is good.
