John Higgins was struggling in a different way. The 49-year-old man hobbled through New Orleans as the wind picked up, carrying what he owned ? a purple comb, a radio and a pack of instant coffee ? on his back.

The homeless shelter where Higgins usually stayed had closed because of fears that Katrina would destroy it. He had no car, no money and nowhere to go, so he was trying to make his way to the Louisiana Superdome, the downtown arena that had hosted Super Bowls and Bob Hope but was pressed into service as a storm shelter.

It's one of many shelters for people who didn't want to leave the city.

Stupid = show up at the shelters when the hurricane hits.

Just saw on the news that the French Quarter is pefectly fine.

They are just reporting on the local news about lots of bodies floating around in NO East - I think there could be a bigger mess than we think in the city.

That I haven't seen. All I see are tons of cars floating away.

What if you had friends or family there and they had no choice?

Hard to say what is really happening. CNN reports one thing and FOX another.... Is there two holes in the roof of the super dome of dozens? Is there flooding or not.

That would be hard to see! Hope it isn't true. Most graves are above ground and in cement crips in low areas of NO.
