Some groups more afraid in post-Hussein Iraq

What a great fuck-up... Bush/Cheney :thumbsup

Quote:

BASRA, Iraq - For Yousef Lyon and other Christians in Basra, the downfall of Saddam Hussein has meant a terrible loss of religious freedom.

The social club where Lyon and his friends would gather in the evening to play dominoes, where families danced or listened to live music on holidays, is closed. Wedding celebrations are held quietly at home.

"Of course, during the Saddam regime it was better," said Lyon, 40, a member of the city's small Armenian community. "Now we are afraid from the religious parties, that maybe they will throw a bomb at us."

Not just the Christians, but many of the city's minorities live in fear of the hard-line Shiite religious parties and their militias that now rule Iraq's second-largest city.

Freedom has been curtailed for women, too. Several decades ago, almost no woman in Basra covered her head. Now, they all do, for fear of harassment or worse. Women working for foreign companies or governments, and those considered to have loose morals, have been marked for death by the militants -- two Iraqi sisters who worked in the laundry at the American compound in Basra were assassinated last year.
PS: how's democracy and the charter going?

Well, at least there is plenty of oil for the SUV ( 3.00/gal :1orglaugh )

WarChild 08-28-2005 01:37 PM

Hey Fiesta, how come you haven't posted anyting about Canada's participation in stealing money from the UN Oil for food program in Iraq? Is it only American politicians that tell lies? Reading your posts, always about a single nation that you don't live in, might lead one to believe that you're blind to what goes on around you in your focused hatred of the United States. :2 cents:

Bush and Cheney currently represent the United States. You might consider looking up the world "Republic".

Well you like to post a lot about the actions of the United States Administration. You post pretty much only negative news items. The fact that you don't ever post negative news about any other goverments, including your own (Canada), leads me to believe you're less interested in Politics and more in interested in posting negative news items about the US. That looks like hatred to me. :2 cents:

You're obviously very interested in Iraq, you post news about it all the time. Recently Canada was implicated in the UN Oil for Food program and you'd epect a Canadian so deeply interested in World politics and specifically Iraq to have some comments about it. Strangely enough you were silent.

Do you know who NewsMax is ????

Visit their site ...

So, if a canadian corporation, has investment with a bank that deals with other banks that deals with companbies buying oil from Iraq, that is a scandal???? Implicated ??? in the Oil for food ??? this article is a mish-mash of words... a bit like the rhetoric that Iraq is responsible for 9/11 ....

You really have to dig deep to find something that remotely looks dirty ... :1orglaugh
I don't have to dig at all , I just extend my hands ....

BTW, read the article I posted... Is it false ? are these people lying? Is Iraq a great democracy now ? Is the mission accomplished ? ...

I don't really understand why you are so motivated in defending this administration .... and no, they are not America, and barely represent it today.

?US behind Reuters soundman?s death?

BAGHDAD: A Reuters Television soundman was shot dead in Baghdad on Sunday and a cameraman with him was wounded and then detained by US soldiers.

Iraqi police said US forces had shot them. A US military spokesman said the incident was being investigated. Waleed Khaled, 35, was hit by a shot to the face and at least four to the chest as he drove to check a report from police sources of an incident involving police and gunmen in the Hay al-Adil district, in the west of the city.

?A team from Reuters news agency was on assignment to cover the killing of two policemen in Hay al-Adil; US forces opened fire on the team from Reuters and killed Waleed Khaled, who was shot in the head, and wounded Haider Kadhem,? an Interior Ministry official quoted the police incident report as saying.

?I heard shooting, looked up and saw an American sniper on the roof of the shopping centre,? cameraman Kadhem, who was wounded in the back, told colleagues who arrived at the scene.

The only known eyewitness, he was later detained by US troops and was still in custody six hours later despite Reuters? requests that he be freed to receive medical attention. His precise whereabouts were not clear. Two Iraqi colleagues who arrived on the scene minutes after the shooting were also briefly detained, then released.

?They treated us like dogs. They made us, including Khaled who was wounded and asking for water, sit in the sun on the road,? Reuters Television soundman Muhammad Idriss said. Asked to comment on the incident, US spokesman Lt Col Steven Boylan said it was being investigated. reuters

Army Contract Official Critical of Halliburton Pact Is Demoted

By ERIK ECKHOLM
Published: August 29, 2005

A top Army contracting official who criticized a large, noncompetitive contract with the Halliburton Company for work in Iraq was demoted Saturday for what the Army called poor job performance.

The official, Bunnatine H. Greenhouse, has worked in military procurement for 20 years and for the past several years had been the chief overseer of contracts at the Army Corps of Engineers, the agency that has managed much of the reconstruction work in Iraq.

FYI...the House did ignore the BJ. The President was impeached for not being truthful while under oath in a Court of Law (a civil case invovling a sexual assault while the President was Governor of Arkansas)...proving that even a US President is not above the law.

Ignore what...and be specific?

Yeah, if/when the US admin finally realizes they created a fucking mess and decide to pull out. Then the Shiite majority (muslim-religous fundamentalist) while commmit mass genocide on the minority Sunnis & Kurds.

Under Saddam, Iraq was one of the more secular Arab countries (woman were allowed to go to school, have drivers licenses, get divorced, walk around in "normal" clothes etc.) Now the religous-fundamentalist (which are way more "hardcore") are starting to control the government.

sacX 08-29-2005 03:31 AM

Scamming the United Nations for oil for food is unacceptable.
Lying under oath when you're President is unacceptable.
Lying to invade a foreign country is ALSO unacceptable.
