www.directnic.com is in downtown New Orleans.

What happens if they lose their internet connections?

Will all domains registered there eventually stop working?

What if the domain in question is actually nameservers that 100s of others domains from other registrars use?

Will the 100s of domains stop working because the main domain doesn't work?

Does anyone know if they have any system redundancy outside of N.O.? Have they thought this scenario through?

SweetT 08-28-2005 09:59 AM

Relax guys.....they could take their systems all completely down and your domains will still work. They just won't be able to sell any new ones.

With that said, however, I know the DC they are in....they have enough redundancy for any eventuality.

Your in good hands.

(and I am saying this...and I am their competitor)

Thanks Tony.

DirectNIC will be fine. Our datacenter is on the 11th floor of a Class A building. There are internal steel storm shutters on the inside. Our datacenter is a bunker and can handle any storm.

We have reduntant connections to the net, as well as a huge diesel generator that is on the 10th floor of the building.

We have enough diesel to run 2 weeks non-stop. We also have backup relationships with other datacenters if it is needed.

Our CEO and technical staff have stayed in town and will be holed up in the datacenter for the duration.

I have almost 100 domains with DirectNIC and I am most concerned about what IF you lose the internet connections.

They could get cut or something, you never know.

I know you have multiple connections, but couldn't those be lost?

Please just tell us what will happen IF you happen to lose the internet connection to the DC.

I think everyone deserves to know the risks here.

Good to here Mike. Where in the city is the datacenter? They're saying on the news in the worse case water could be 35 feet deep in New Orleans. Better make sure the guys have 2 weeks of food up there and a life raft just in case they get trapped.

Advanced Intellect 08-28-2005 11:50 AM

Not looking good I guess.

riddler 08-28-2005 11:59 AM

I guess it's a little late to get a couple hundred domains moved to another registrar.

Actually, I'm more worried about my servers being in Tuscaloosa, AL.

The building holding up is not the issue here, its power and their internet connection staying up.

Umm, Think about for a second, Datacenter.. HIGH Power Diesel generators which usally can run for months on end if needed... Sorry let me rephrase my last post.. "If they dont have a data center with out good generators and a building that can hold up they are stupid" :P
