Whats the point in filtering traffic so much that you end up with 1:10 ratios?

isnt he cute? you can pet him.. go ahead.

its just being honest to your traffic. i explain to them that ofcourse you have to be over 18, its going to cost, they get a life time pass, they are going to need a credit card/debit and arent going to be rebilled.

an edjucated surfer signs up to shit, comes back and signs up to other shit.

alot of surfers have been burnt alot of times. if they think for one sec that they are looking at a scam then there is no way in hell they are going to sign up.

1:10 was kinda hard, but it ended up that way after many diff tests and filters.

im prob gonna cut back on some of the scrubbing and let more of the traffic through to see how much the ratios change and if i get more sign ups

franck.. why? are you not filtering your traffic? you might want to give it a shot and see if you end up with more sales.

I see it this way:

Lets say you have 10k surfers. You filter and filter and eventually 30 click through to the website of which 3 buy. Very high ratio indeed because it was clear those 3 kept clicking because they wanted to buy something. BUT you couldve sent maybe 500 people to the site. 30 of those people are the same people who wanted to buy. You have them anyway. Plus now you have 470 potential buyers. Maybe not as willing as those 30 people but hey, what do you have to lose? They might be interested in something on page 3 of the tour. Something they wouldve never seen if you filtered them out 5 pages ago.

Honestly, i think youre losing sales. Maybe even a lot.

Dirty F 08-22-2005 01:02 PM

Why filter traffic? Every person is a potential buyer. those 3 people will sign up anyway, why not give the 100's of others a chance as well? If you really dont want those people please send them to me.

filtering means sending people to places they are interested in.

- you can dump 10k on webcams and make 3 sales.
- you filter 5k to webcams and 5k to penis enlargement and make 6 sales total.

just an example.

Well yes ofcourse. If you indeed send them somewhere else. Give them a choice. But if its gallery traffic for instance i dont see the point in having a link on the gallery that says "join here for just 2.99" since that traffic isnt going anywhere else...You simply lose it.

nofx 08-22-2005 01:19 PM

This argument is completely contextual. Franck and Brandon are both right in their own respects.

I personally don't mind using bandwidth if it's worthwhile. However, there's no need to waste it. When you're doing business online for a while you understand concepts well and realize that depending on your source. Targeting and filtering are a means of efficiency and profitability. You can disqualify a lot of non-convertible traffic through some of the things that Brandon does.

For example, let's just say that I can count on Google for 10,000 visitors this month. I want them to be qualified visitors. If they are coming to my site under a false pretense or a misleading ad, their propensity to purchase dives.

It is in my best interest to make sure that they are getting what they are looking for.

On the flip side of the same token a lot of the web business works on bulk traffic. Once this traffic arrives at the site you have an opportunity to sell someone that may or not be interested.

So there is no right or wrong on this subject it's a matter of managing channels and users to maximize each opportunity.
