I cannot afford to drink for the next month after the party Friday night, so I sat in talking to K-man on ICQ tonight ... Which is the worse of 2 evils ??? :1orglaugh

Anyways the topic somehow became nostalgic consumer electronics ... I think I gave myself 30 new grey hairs telling him about my parents paying $1600 in 1981 for a JVC Two-Head VHS recorder the size or a fucking XEROX machine, that you could program only 10 channels into, and the tapes loaded in the top of the bastard ...

We then remenissed about Sinclair ZX81's ... VIC=20's, Intellivisions, PONG, Colecovisions ... and he told me about his father's 8-track player .... LMFAO

I still got a PANASONIC RS-805US Stereo 8 Track "recorder" that works like a charm, and is still a proud part of my stereo rack, right along side my Harmon Kardon receiver, Pioneer CD deck, and Cerwin Vega monitors ... problem is that most of my old Meatloaf, Styx, Boston, and REO Speedwagon cartriges are all crapping out on me now :(

I'd be very interested in what pieces of nostalgic equipment you have laying around your basement, or even still being used to this day ??

Oh yeah ... I also have one of those SEARS "Stereophonic" phonograph players (orange and black beast - I'm sure somebody knows what I am talking about ... Sears was the first company to sell them)

Problem was most phonograph records were still recorded in MONO back then, so you didn't get true stereo effect for the most part :(

I've got a 4 track Fostex cassette recorder from the 70's, a few Atari's & C64's, and Oddessy-2, and a pretty serious ass 12 bit Akai synth from the 80's. I'm sure there's more if I look in the other direction.

Very kewl ... My grandfather had an AMPEX reel-to-reel machine that I had my sites on for years ... by the time I finally acquired it, it did not work at all and was labelled "unrepairable" by our local fix-it shop .... hahaha

Fix-it shops were the bomb !!!
Shops were people brought every kind of gadget imagineable to be repaired ... Like a garage sale store ... those guys who worked in them had to be pretty talented ... they cold fix almost ANYTHING .. most of the time !

Yeah, that's a good point.

Those old tape decks are classic. Any world class producer still records on 2" and lays out their masters to 1/2" reel 2 reel. In some industry's, Analog is still king.

Betamax is preffered over DV for live screenings. Reliability!

Somewhere, I've got a 500 watt Kenwood Solid-state amp from the early 70's...big knobs and toggle switches. When it says 500 watts, it MEANS 500 watts! Big noise, lots of waste heat...truly the shit.

I have to agree with you there Squishy ... they just don't make Hi-Fidelity equipment like they used too! :(

Before I bought my Harmon Kardon 2 years ago ... I had an old YAMAHA tube amp ....

I had Radio Shack MACH 2000 liquid-cooled speakers with 15" driver, double 6" mids and 2x6 horns .... and the fucking yammy BLEW THEM !!!

Well let's see.. I still have a few blank IBM (Hollerith) cards from when I was a machine room supervisor in 71. Now them was the real computer days.. :)

2 15 in woofers Huge Horns and the tweeters weighed like 12 pounds..You can take the front cover off and it would split in 2 pieces.. My dad had solid gold emblems made JBL for each side of the cabinet,I kept those..

My father bought this in the late 60's..We still have the 75 watt fischer tube amp..

We sold it to a Japanese collector for 40 grand..Was my fathers pride and joy..He was a classical violinist and I was raised with Hi Fidelity my whole life...Sometimes i regret selling,but couldnt pass up the price.. His violins will stay forever..

Damn, my grandpa gave me his old Reel-to-Reel, too. I don't have any idea where it's at now, maybe my parents house some where. The only tapes I ever had were bootlegs of his band playing and telling stories at somebody's house. Funny shit.

He also gave me a huge two-channel tube amp built in the 50's. It's all steel outside, about 2 feet tall, and used to power an opera house his band bought and played in during the seventies. The thing is just so wild looking...and it still works. Not exactly Hi-Fi though. :)

I think my Grandma still has 2 or 3 big "Console" style stereos in different rooms of her house. You know, the 4 ft. wide wooden ones, tube powered with the flip up lids. One of them is a reel-to-reel, 8-track, and turntable all in one. The thing looks like brand new.

Vinyl kicks the shit out of cds any fucking day of the week.
