Do you own a board? Banning Question?

I have a mainstream board that deal with travel. It's pretty active, not GFY active, but it does alright. The problem is that I have one member who is driving everyone crazy. He hasn't specifically broken a rule that would lead me to ban him, but I've got members afraid to post and moderators who want to quit.

What do you do in that case? Do I ban the one guy for being a clueless idiot? Or do I tough it out and lose mods and members until he does something that directly breaks a rule? This one has give me a big headache. Maybe that's a bannable offense.

It's your board. If you feel that him being an idiot is fucking up the place, then by all means ban him.

if he's upsetting your other posters is that not classified as abuse?

perhaps you can ban him under the guise of 'abuse'.. maybe PM him and suggest he become a serious poster or you will have to remove him from your database

long term you have to pay attention to the people who count on boards, they're the ones making you money - having someone on there who's disruptive to the others and to the general 'feel' of the board can do more damage than you breaking your own 'rules' and banning the guy for abuse

ban him and your other board members will probably feel even more inclined to stick with a board that listens to them

Have you tried a temp-ban first with a "warning" ? We do that a lot on another large board I mod on. Sometimes it works and the shitdick normalizes... sometimes they end up perma-banned once they piss us off again.

We do the same thing. Give them a chance and if that doesn;t work we ban them. Pretty much teh same circumstances too.

If he's hurting your bottom line then definitely ban him. If he is just being a dick then warn him by PM or put him on the penalty box for a week or two. If he continues to act up then get rid of him.
