Chocolate is toxic for dogs...

I knew it some time ago, but it seems most of the general public isnt aware of this, and its something quite dangerous, even if you dont care about pets.

Frank The Tank 08-19-2005 06:02 AM

i knew it when i was 12 and killed the neighbours dog by accident they can take a small amount but a full bar of any full choclate bar - as in only choclate will kill them

Chocolate wont kill a dog but it'll make him really sick, unless they happened to eat a lot of the shit.

Dogs have about the same metabolism as humans do which would help get the toxic elements out of his system. Did you know that you could safely give your dog an aspirin if it was in pain?

Now if you were to take cats for example, chocolate / aspirin would most likely kill them cute lil fuckers.

my dog tripped balls once when he ate a shitload of those chocolate easter egs... I was asleep and the idiot woke me up because he was running like a crazy fucker trough the house, over the tables, the couch etc lol that was a kinda weird situation he looked like he took a bit to much xtc

Frank The Tank 08-19-2005 06:12 AM

Thanks for pointing that out.

Jakke PNG 08-19-2005 06:27 AM

I guess that is true, but not in all cases. My aunts dog has eaten TONS of chocolate and the dog is alive and well, and never even got sick.

Yeah, I think dogs lack pancrea - the organ that's responsible controling the levels of blood sugar... The love chocolate though so this could mess with their blood sugar.

dirtydesignz 08-19-2005 06:29 AM

To dogs, chocolate is delicious, but potentially lethal. The cocoa bean, from which chocolate is produced, contains a drug called theobromine. This is closely related to caffeine, which chocolate also contains. The toxicity of chocolate for dogs is due to its theobromine content. Chocolate poisoning is very serious. It contains a long lasting, very potent toxin that can cause death. This toxicity is largely unfamiliar to most people, who may not worry too much if their dog is a bit sick after eating a quantity of chocolate.

If you know your pet has ingested large quantities of chocolate, do not wait for symptoms to occur, induce vomiting and take him to the vet immediately!

Symptoms occur within a few hours, but have been known to be delayed for as long as 24 hours. It can take as long as 3 days for the dog to recover completely.
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Urinary Incontinence
Hyperactivity
Rapid Breathing and Heart Rate
Muscle Tremors
Seizures
Coma

Chocolate is also poisonous to cats, but due to their picky eating habits, this type of poisoning is not as serious a problem. If your cat ingests chocolate, treat the situation the same as if it were a dog.

yes i knew. also, i was told by my vet that only a minimal amount can kill a dog (course my little girls are only 5 pounders.. so i am sure mine would be highly suseptable).
i also recently read that raisins can be toxic to dogs as well. they are not even sure of the exact reason, but feel it goes back to grapes somehow..
anyone else hear anything like that?

PussyTeenies 08-19-2005 06:33 AM

we never give any of the chocolate to our dog.. (we know its toxic! like pork.. which can even give brain infections) :Oh crap

we rather eat it our selfs :winkwink:

Yes it can.

The good news is that it takes, on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine 100-150 mg/kg to cause a toxic reaction. Although there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, animal size and chocolate concentration.

On average,
Milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz.
Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg/oz.
Baker's chocolate 390mg/oz.

Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as:
1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate
1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate
1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker's chocolate.

As you can see if a dog accidently eat some bakers chocolate you may have laying around your dog is DEAD.

Denis_SC 08-19-2005 07:07 AM

I knew it was bad for them but toxic .... :Oh crap

mrthumbs 08-19-2005 07:15 AM

i really doubt that although i have a vet who says just that.
Ive seen dogs eat kilo's of chocolate in my liofetime and never once get sick.

Well it's true. Drinking a few drops of anti-freeze won't kill you but I don't recomend it.

Anyways if it's milk chocolate like a Hershey bar and you have a 120 lbs rottweiler he'd have to eat 75 Hershey bars at one time.

sherie 08-19-2005 07:28 AM

Death by chocolate!

My dog is like 10lbs, she's eaten chocolate before and thankfully it hadn't affected her. My friend left it laying around and she got into it...At this one holistic pet store that I go to, they have this chocolate flavored shit that I still won't get for her for fear of her getting sick. It looks and smells just like chocolate but I am not doing the taste test...nu uh.

bangman 08-19-2005 07:39 AM

My buddy ate half of a chocolate milkshake from Ritas and I was scared to death he would start getting sick or worse. He didn't though thankfully.

Very little chocolate in a milkshake.

Doc911 08-19-2005 08:21 AM

Its very Toxic for them..

HpicAnn 08-19-2005 08:28 AM

Well thanks for the tip i wasnt aware of this and i have a mini pincher that loves hershey's kisses so i wont give them to him anymore...

wedouglas 08-19-2005 08:31 AM

I give it to my dogs all the time. It's bullshit. There is a difference between a candy bar and baker chocolate.

Tala 08-19-2005 08:32 AM

And yes, aspirin WILL kill dogs. I've seen it time and again when I worked at a veterinary clinic. I've experienced it firsthand with a dog of my own, when I was a kid, my mom gave one of the dogs an aspirin and it died from it later.

Chocolate and aspirin are puppy killers. :(

give my dog little pieces whenever I eat some. The only time I had to make my dog throw it up was when he ate all the hollowen candy. even after that he was fine.

Not as serious as it's made out to be. Atleast for average sized dogs. :2 cents:
