L.A. police say video inspired teens arrested for homeless attacks
 

LOS ANGELES ? Police arrested a pair of 19-year-old men Tuesday for investigation of attempted murder in connection with a baseball bat attack on two homeless men allegedly inspired by a video, officials said.
William Orantes and Justin Brumfield, both of Inglewood, told officers that they had recently seen the DVD "Bumfights," which features homeless people fighting each other, and wanted to do some "bum bashing" of their own, said police spokesman Officer Jason Lee.

The first victim, Gerald McHenry, 38, told authorities he was attacked about 2 a.m. Tuesday while sleeping on a downtown sidewalk.

A private security guard about 90 minutes later saw two men beating another homeless man, Ernest Adams, with a bat, police said. The guard followed the suspects and Los Angeles police officers stopped them.

Police recovered two aluminum bats and a replica firearm from their vehicle, Lee said.

Adams was listed in critical condition at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center with severe head trauma, Lee said. McHenry was treated and released, he said.

Orantes and Brumfield remained in custody Tuesday night with bail set at $500,000, Lee said.

Two Las Vegas residents who produced the "Bumfights" videos were sentenced to 180 days in jail in February for failing to complete community service. They pleaded guilty in June 2003 to misdemeanor charges of conspiracy to stage an illegal fight for their videos. Two other "Bumfights" producers also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges and were sentenced to community service.

Police Chief William Bratton called the producers of the DVD "mental midgets."

"That's the shame of it ... that we as a society allow these kinds of things be promulgated," Bratton said.

The issue is not the videos..but it goes much deeper than that.

You see some of the same type of thought processes here at work on GFY...like for instance in the thread where there was a purported video of some chick being beaten for being a "snitch."

I wouldn't be surprised if a few people on this board would be susceptible to joining in with a group of friends to go out bum or gay bashing.

It doesnt even have anything to do with bumfights. The whole premise was bums fighting each other for money.. not people beating up bums.

I'm sure all the "kidnapping homeless people " was staged on the bumfights , and if not i feel really sorry for the idiots who made the video. Other than that i don't really see any difference between bumfights and wwf or "toughman"

My point had nothing really to do with the videos at all...I was saying that it has nothing to do with the bumfight videos but the propensity for violence, the desensitization for violence, the lack of respect for others that seems to grow in our society, something that is evident on this board.

I say that all problems start with bad parenting. If you really want to get to the root of the problem.

While driving tests are a joke, they at least serve a purpose to qualify someone's general fitness to operate a car. Why can't we do the same thing for parents. Bad parents are far more detrimental to society than a bad driver.

I don't care what you watch. If you're influenced to beat up, or kill someone from watching a video, the problem is far deeper than the video.

bum bashing has been around a lot longer then the video. Bumfights just gives them something to point the finger at as well as providing another target for a lawsuit

I thought bumfights was funny, that being that I figured it was staged; But this is just bullshit teenage shit, we did the same thing although we picked fights with with people our own age. Lame, it's the influence of american youth at it's best.
