Which Is Best Australian City To Live In?

out of:

Perth
Melbourne
Sydney
Brisbane
Adelaide

which has lowest crime?
which has best climate?
which has best features?

BRISK 08-16-2005 03:06 PM

I like Sydney the most, but I don't think it has the lowest crime.

Brisbane gets too hot in the summer for me.

I haven't been to Perth yet, but from what I've seen it looks nice.

sfera 08-16-2005 03:07 PM

i hear Sydney is very nice. clean. lots of professional. and fast growning in the business worlds

I've never noticed much difference in climate between Sydney and Brisbane, except that Brisbane is even warmer than Sydney. Melbourne is a bit cooler.

The Other Steve 08-16-2005 03:49 PM

I've lived in Sydney and Hobart and I've spent time in Melbourne and now I live 31/2 hours north of Brisbane and f you're looking for a good climate then Brisbane has got to be the place.

I noticed someone described Sydney as being 'clean' - that's not the Sydney I know.

If you're looking for all the good things but don't need the of a capital city then you really couldn't go past a place like here. Mild winters, warm summers - right by the water, broadband internet connection - it's almost perfect.

What makes Sydney unclean? I think Sydney is just as clean as Brisbane or Melbourne. I've travelled all over the world and I've never thought Sydney isn't clean.

ozmatt 08-16-2005 03:57 PM

i live in brisbane, its a pretty big city that is growing everyday, yet its not too big, its still nice and spaced out and doesnt have the traffic issues alot of other cities might. Although i dont work in the city so i never really have to drive in there.

Does get very hot and humid, but the gold coast is only 45 mins drive south, sunshine coast about 1 hour depending on which side of the city you live.

Really depends on what you are after, do you like the beach? big city living? lots of clubs and cafes? nightlife?

Ive lived in Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide. Brisbane is best for weather but I didnt like the city itself, a purely personal opinion though.

Sydney is great fun, multicultural, great lifestyle but expesive.

Adelaide is a nice city. A bit cooler in the winter but the summers are red hot. I dont know how old you are but Id say if you are a bit older or prefer the good things in life, like nice wine, geat food etc then Adelaide is a good place.

I havnt been to Perth, but I have heard very good things about it. You may feel a little isolated though. 2 days by train to the next city (Adelaide).

Some of the places on the Sunshune Coast north of Brisbane are great. Noosa would be top of my list I think if I head back down under.

ozmatt 08-16-2005 04:06 PM

yeah maybe avoid the cities all together. Try Cairns or Airlie Beach, Byron Bay, maybe gold coast/noosa/mooloolaba (all in Queensland except byron bay)These places are great if you like it hot and near the beach.

I forgot about Byron, that is a fantastic place. Do you like weed?

ozmatt 08-16-2005 04:34 PM

hey damian, you're in London? I just got here on the weekend for 5 weeks, staying in Fulham. Which part are you in?

personally:

Brisbane.. lovely city especially on the river and not in some shit hole suburb but WAY TOO HOT AND HUMID. fuck.. the gold coast is too hot and humid.. hell so is byron.. but it gets worse the further you go up.

Sydney.. great city, heaps to do.. crime isn't great.. but it's the biggest so thats probably why. I lived there for 5+ years before i escaped to the far north coast. Great if you love live music and good food.. plenty of biz.. but obviously congestion etc are problems.. fuck taking an hour to get to an office in the morning.

Melbourne.. personally i like melbourne the best. it's more "arty".. great architecture LOTS more trees than Sydney.. bit more pedestrian friendly. Melbourne has the coolest climate out of any in your list cept adelaide but it still gets hot in summer.. but still nicer than sydney and brisvegas. Great for foodies and music too.

never been to perth.. never been to adelaide..

bhutocracy 08-16-2005 04:39 PM

oh btw byron bay has the absolute best fish and chips in australia... fishmongers - the calamari will cream your pants.

Mr.Right - Banned For Life 08-16-2005 04:53 PM

Melbourne is great if you dont mind cold weather, great food great nightlife, plenty to do all year around, my second favorite is the Gold Coast in Queensland, that place is cool, i lived there for two years and really enjoyed it.

Sydneys a large city close to 4 million, and within Sydney there are some very nice areas and some very shit areas like all large cities. It really depends on what you want to spend, suburbs close to the beaches tend to be better and the further west you go the more problems you will encounter, but thats just a general rule.

Bake 08-16-2005 05:03 PM

To live in Sydney you really are better of on the north shore. You need at least 1 mil to buy something nice there thou.

tristan_D 08-16-2005 05:04 PM

I would choose city. I went there last year and it was a lovely city.

BaldBastard 08-16-2005 05:04 PM

Bake
I'm in Seaforth try 2 million ;) and even then you will have a hardtime finding anything.

Or bondi.. I could almost live in sydney again if it was near the beach.. i spent my 5 years in the inner west.. glebe, annandale etc.. great suburbs really close to everything.. kind of uni student/wog suburbs.. so a little bit hippyish without being newtown.. ok trees and good little eateries and shops etc.. but still kinda innercity and plenty of dogshit on the footpaths :).
Dunno it's all good.. but a beach suburb would be nice so it's not like leaving the beach (not that i ever use it but good to wander down to recharge every now and then.) then again everything is so expensive these days.. im not paying 1mil+ just to live in fucking sydney in a one bedroom apartment..

hoxton 08-16-2005 05:38 PM

the debate of the greatest Ausrtalian city will never have an outcome. The major cities are all very different, I have lived in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne - and if I had to broadly summerize each city:
Brisbane - True Australia, Awesome weather, easy life, no traffic, waterskiing on the river, an hour to the world greatest beaches, sundays spent outside with a beer in hand.
Sydney - Gorgeous to look at, built for tourism, bright lights big city, all about work, traffic sucks, money, awesome inner city beach coves, awesome weather.
Melbourne - All about culture, hideaway bars and pubs, built for melbournians, great food, European inspired architecture, easy traffic, sports mad, fireplaces in winter...

I choose Melbourne... for now

CC 08-16-2005 05:39 PM

Have you ever looked into Cairns? :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup It's not a large city, but it's WONDERFUL.

Can you still buy around crowsnest for 1 mil?
I know down on the water 2 mil is the starting price.

sweethotkayla 08-16-2005 05:45 PM

I used to live in melbourne and its real cold during winter! Summer isnt to bad although some times you would have to rug up. I now live in Brisbane and its wonderful. Summer or Winter the weather is wonderful. The storms are amazing.

bawdy 08-16-2005 06:02 PM

anyone complaining about the heat/humidity in brisbane... buy an airconditioner....

brisbane is pretty easy place to live especially around paddington/red hill... city isnt big enough for me though

imafuckingaussie 08-16-2005 06:06 PM

Good question, obviously each inhabitant of each city will say theres is best most likely!

Tasmania, whilst cold, is a fucking beautiful place and extremely low crime. But the truth is, all Australia is miles from the other countries in the world crime rates, especially USA. So I dont think thats a factor, anywhere in Australia can also get u killed if in the wrong place at the wrong time, there are criminals all over the world, Chopper Reed lives in Tassie so he will watch your back (joking!)

Climates....

Melbourne - Fucking cold, I live up the road from there, I hate the fucking winters but the summers are quite nice, not too hot, nice!

WA - Sposed to be really nice, fucking pretty warm place though.

Brisbane-QLD - Where I would like to go to, always nice and warm throughout the year but the summer is sposed to be pretty humid and will test you oit if you dont like heat, I would like it though!

Sydney - Whilst I hate the fucking streets and the city basically just cos its so crowded etc. it has a really good climate as its between Melbourne and Brisbane, not too hot, not too cold.

Best climate would be North of Sydney and South of Brisbane, that is the most ideal climate as you would be getting like 20 degrees most of the time.

some ideas for ya anyhow ;-)

Internet sucks here, cable tv sucks here etc. but its a nice place to live )

So where do they make these airconditioners that you can wear? :)
thanks but no thanks.. it's nice not to walk down the end of the block to get a drink and come back drenched with sweat. The humidity there hits you like a wall.

Visited Perth + Sydney, lived on Gold Coast and Noosa (current).

Perth is pretty cool, too far to fly back to NZ to visit the relatives though.

Would not leave Noosa (tewantin acctually) though 1.5 hrs to Brisbane airport so not to far away from major city, winter here now my fav time of year.

yeah it's the tail end of winter and it's still nice and hot during the day.. kinda the perfect time really before it gets unbearable.. although it's still too cold to swim or surf.

I vote for Brisbane: warm, cheaper, more relaxed, an hour and a half from some great beaches.

jscott 08-16-2005 07:48 PM

i heard from a very good aussie friend of mine that Brisbone is an awesome city, in his words "it's like a mini miami"

reynold 08-17-2005 02:31 AM

I haven't been in Australia but I've heard Sydney is such a great place.

cj_purve 08-17-2005 02:46 AM

*anywhere* in Australia is beautiful ... we're lucky like that ;-)

sydney is an overpriced shithole!!! LOL
great to visit but crap to live. and the people have a mini new york complex ... and its too cold.

brisbane will always be my home ... its great if you love the heat and like the pace a bit slower.

i'm currently living on the gold coast - and its an awesome place to live and a good representation of Australia. beach and babes ;-)

samsam 08-17-2005 03:30 AM

i did searched about melbourne but i badly need to ask some questions about it to someone who lives there.

whats good about byron?

it looks like its between brisbane and sydney

whats the weather like there?

I like Sydney best.

Melbourne is a great place to bring up kids.

Byron is where we keep the hippies.

Brisbane is where we keep the rednecks... and send our old people to retire.

In case no one else warns you... Adelaide is where all the axe murders and psycho's down here come from.

Newcastle or Woolongong are nice beach front cities near Sydney that might be worth a look too.

Close your eyes and think about all the good things you have heard about Aus.

Very laid back, great weather, blondes, tans, surfing, food, wine, sea etc etc.

Thats Byron.

It get's very overcrowded with tourists around xmas time each year.. so isnt quite as laid back then... but you do get a good supply of girls ready for some holiday sex to make up for that! :pimp
