Back in the 80's some of us ran BBS systems and this was the type of content was distributed. Downloadable text files that you could print out on a dot-matrix printer.... after waiting 30 minutes for the download.

I just remember how cool the new EGA monitors were. You could finally see pictures in color. Of course it only had 16 colors so the pictures looked like this:

It didn't take 30 minutes to download an ascii picture, even on a 300 baud modem.

I had forgotten those, but now I remember using a utility program called ditto to read punch cards and write to an impact printer.

I was rounding up to the nearest half-hour. :)

Seriously, no of course the small files didn't take that long if everything went okay. But I remember times when there would be bad connections and downloads would take forever to transfer a file.

Next you'll be telling me that my grandfather didn't walk 20 miles to school barefoot in the snow uphill... bothways.

In college I had to write programs in FORTRAN on punch cards. One line of code per card then bind them with a rubber band and drop them off at the computer center.

If you dropped them and got them out of order you were fucked.

Than it would take several hours for a little program to run and print out the results.

But I think your memory is a decade off. The Comodore 64 came out in 1981, before that there was the Comodore Vic 20 (don't let the name fool you, it only had 5Kb of RAM).

By the early 90s we were using 386 systems.

Ah yeah ANSI ;-) i have been runnin a 9 node bbs in the old days, US Robotic Courier models and PC Express software.. It was a magic era..
My first bbs i ran on a C64 with one floppy drive.. people downloaded a list with warez and requested it and i put in the right floppy so they could download.. :-)

Damn 9 Nodes! I had a 3 node ringdown... did you get the "SysOp" discount on those USRs? %50 off so I only paid $450 each instead of $900! :)

I was USHQ for ANGELS/DEFJAM for several years... until bout 1993... had the phone company calling me threatening to charge me for overseas callers that used hacked CCs phoing my BBS... LOL! They said I owed them thousands and thousands!


I've got an old A2000 with monitor if you're interested... just needs a new SCSI drive and workbench...

But we solved that with blueboxing :-) there was a nice relay station in Bahrijn.. somewere in the middle east we blueboxed the crap out of for years..

My first C64 had a tape drive that used standard cassette tapes. I remember drooling over the floppy drives.

I've still got my Amiga 1000 and 2000 and a shitload of disks sitting right next to me, haven't had the chance to hook it all up.

Once in a while I do a google search for titles of text filez I authored back when, and it's fun to see them come up.
