Aghh: Weight lifters, ever pop your shoulder out of place?
So I was doing seated barbell military press a few days ago and the equipment that provides the seat/back cushion/rack for the barbell is fucked up. you're positioned in such a way that you have to lift off the barbell with your arms kind of behind your head/torso.
I've never had a problem with this at all before. I was lifting off 165 lbs (which is weight I could have gotten up 10x because I've done it before + more) - well for some damn reason when I went to lift it off, my left shoulder popped out of place.. it fucking HURT@!@!@! i set the weight down and i was bending over cringing in pain and finally it popped back in after a few seconds.. the past few days it has been sore as all hell but I think it's getting better. now I know to get a damn lift off for every set. |
i blew my shoulder out in high school, some of the worst pain i have ever been in. it pretty much pops in and out at will now, it fucking sucks. you should really think about going to the hospital when that happens and having the docs make sure it is back in place right, sometimes if it goes back wrong you can pinch blood vessels or nerves in your neck and arms.
good luck with that, becareful with that fucker for a little while. |
Behind the neck lifts are always a little dangerous. I do a lot of different shoulder excercises to work different parts of my shoulders but nothing behind my neck. As a matter of fact there are a couple of common excercises I avoid because they hurt me all the time. Standing straight barbell curls for one because doing them continually hurts the tendon in my left forearm. Luckilly there are other excercises to do to work the same muscles instead.

I had a habit of sleeping in bed with one arm hanging off the side. One night I turned over and fell out of bed and my arm got caught between the bed frame and the night stand. Needless to say, it was a very rude awakening. I had to go to the ER to get my shoulder put back into place. The doctors all thought it was pretty funny when I told them how it happened and then they wanted to know what the girl's name was that threw me out of bed! But seriously, I was alone that particular night and had to drive my manual transmission with one hand, which wasn't an easy task to get to the ER in one piece.

My friend had the same thing happen to him and he had to be taken to the hospital, recovery wasnt swift either and hes still having trouble. I would definitely follow the other advice in this thread and get it checked out at either a hospital or with a doctor. You never know if there can be long term damage and you shouldnt fuck with your health, you dont always get a second chance.
