im a noob: explain to me why css makes tables obsolete?
Is it because you can determine the position of an item on the page?
Are tables a thing of the past? I never use css.. im still stuck in the 90's and that scares me. |

tables aren't obsolete. sometimes you need to use them to overcome bugs in the way IE uses css. i.e. the 3 pixel bug:mad:

css has a number of advantages over tables for layouts. tables DO have a purpose, and that's just to show tabular data. - a lot less coding for the spiders to crawl - css with xhtml = standards compliant - better for things like screen readers and there are more, but these are the major ones. |

I'll stop. Just a couple of more posts..

you ever actually look at the css files on some of these sites...?
they can be fucking huge. |

css and html in combination is the best route IMO; only using one of the two isn't a wise choice

Each page you see (new design) uses the exact same html. http://www.csszengarden.com |

buddy, you can't use css without html. HTML is ALWAYS present. |
i've seen more fucked up pages using a CSS layout than I have pages using tables.
tables are your friend. |
