will unix servers still be around in a few years from now?

more and more webmasters are using windows servers theses days, could it be that everything we learned to love about the stability of unix servers will fade out? into the microsoft empire?

darksoul 08-11-2005 06:10 AM

where did you got that from ?

Platinumpimp 08-11-2005 06:11 AM

:1orglaugh

Unix will be around even more in a few years from now. It's more safe and stable.

CheneyRumsfeld 08-11-2005 06:11 AM

how much did Gates pay you to post that?

wjxxx 08-11-2005 06:14 AM

I would never use windows server for hosting

go pro, go unix

I am using only freeBSD or debian on my servers.

I am even using linux for my work station, since some time I'm stick with - http://www.ubuntulinux.org/ it's easy to use and pretty great linux distru, build on debian.

I reccomend to everyone to at least take a look at it.
They can ship you as many Ubuntu CDs as you like to - free of charge and free of shipping costs - if you like to.

Regards

I can't believe there are real people out there running websites on windows servers... It's kind of scary.

psili 08-11-2005 07:03 AM

Windows is fine for desktop work.
Can't compare, in my opinion, to a Unix flavored server.
I wrote a one line command yesterday to recursively find all *.html files from a root directory, create hyperlinks from their names and pipe that into one master file of links - one line executed from the command line on unix; windows can't do that shit.

Gimp currently has got a shitload of options and possibilities and is quite nice, but as you said, it's still NOT photoshop..

Its true that designers can meet problems while using GNOME or KDE as their working environment, but as for my requirements it's ideal bcoz linux is definitely the heaven for programmers.

ASP.NET is superior. I doubt that unix/linux (or whatever) will be used for serious web servers in 5-10 years from now.

OG LennyT 08-11-2005 08:16 AM

The real question is, will Windows servers be around in a few years?

are you fucking retarded? PHP whoooooooooops ASP's ass man. When Winblows can come out with shit that isn't oozing with security holes then maybe....maybe, windows will challenge Unix/linux/BSD but until then, no chance in hell of the unix OS's going anywhere.

The open source development model has proven itself over and over again to be the fastest and cheapest way to generate superior and secure code. At the current rate, Microsoft-based solutions will be far, far behind in 5-10 years.

Isn't that the truth. The only thing windows is good for is spreading virus's

I almost choked when I read this, but I'd like to hear the explanation - maybe you know something I don't?

Seriously, not being sarcastic at all, but what makes you say that ASP.net is superior (to PHP I assume?) and that "serious" web servers won't be running *X?

The only people that talk like that are people who have been brainwashed by the MCSE courses.

Personally, I think that there is enough room for everyone. There is a good solution to every problem. Some of those solutions involve windows, some involve Linux. From my point of view, it's best to appreciate them both and know exactly where the strengths and weaknesses are in both so that you can solve the problem in the best way possible.

However, this is starting to remind me of a geeky OS flame war :)

I'm assuming you're basing this on all the people asking for Windows Servers on GFY?
It's simply because people know where to get *nix servers, MS servers are harder to find... I for one would never ever reccomend using Windows Server, it's such a bitch to deal with :1orglaugh
