Not unless you aren't a naturalized american or canadian citizen.

Does anyone know for sure if a passport is needed for travelling from Canada to USA?

theres no definitive answer.....
sometimes they ask for one, someone they dont....my GF went to the US 2 months ago with her friend and they asked for their passports (but they both had them)....

and my friend went last week and they didnt even ask about it...

To get into Canada....NO. A birth certificate and a goverment ID will do the trick to get ya back in. You don't need a passport at the land borders until 2008. If you are traveling by air or sea, you will need them starting January 2006 to return to the US. I cross the border every day, so I'm pretty up yo speed on these things.

Ecksent is correct.

On your return to the US you need to prove your US Citizenship which can be a birth certificate AND a goverment issued ID. A US driver's license alone does not prove you are a citizen. And of course you can always use a passport instead.

SilverTab, if your GF was asked for a passport it was probably because she didn't have her birth certificate.

DL and Birth Cert will do it, going in and out of Canada for Americans and Canadians.. Sometimes it's smart to bring proof of address, like a phone bill. Good advice for Canadians coming into America, but can't hurt for proof either way.

Not if you're tall and bald.

mm not sure...might be the case!...

although she was a canadian going to the US...not an american coming to canada!..(just to make sure you're not mixed up...)

I know I heard some stories of people(canadians) being asked for their passport when crossing the borders....

Ahhh, I assumed she was an American. I don't know about requirements for Canadian's crossing the border.

The Americans now have adopted some kind of "positive ID" thing when crossing the border. Like I said, I cross the same border....everyday....same people, everyday....and they still check my ID. I said to one of the guards a few weeks ago (who was in the booth EVERYDAY I went through), "do you think my Citizenship changed since yesterday?" He was cool and explained that they have to check everyone's ID no matter if they cross every day or not. Kind of a pain in the ass, especially this time of year when they hire the college kids for the summer and they think they have all the power over you. I'm such an ass when I cross into the States since I'm American (and they can't deny me entry). Stupid rent-a-cop college fuckers!!! :321GFY
