Amsterdam show? Worth it to fly coach?

I really want to go to the Amsterdam show, but unfortunately, there's just no upgrades left in first class on any of the major airlines during that time period. Best purchase price I could get for business class was $3950.00 each.. add the girlfriend's ticket in and we're talking $8k before we even get off the ground. Ouch.

I haven't flown coach (except to Vegas and Arizona) in about 5 years, and I can't imagine flying to Europe. I reserved three coach seats for the two of us, but there's so much more to first class than just the width of the seats. (sigh)

What to do, what to do?

(especially since I've already booked an Amsterdam, Belgium and Berlin trip for the Eurowebtainment show in October)

DateDoc 08-08-2005 10:28 AM

Try Delta, www.delta.com, they are cheaper than a lot of the other major airlines quite often. Last time I flew coach to Europe there was a baby crying all night 1 aisle over and a 300# man in the seat next to me (no offense to big ppl but he took up a quarter of my already small seat as well).

Big E 08-08-2005 10:34 AM

Already checked Delta.. roughly the same. Expedia says the cheapest business class ticket is $5200 (all airlines).

DutchTeenCash 08-08-2005 10:36 AM

damn thats pricy... I always wondered cant you get a ticket here (Holland), they are a LOT cheaper

I fly to Europe every two weeks on coach. The best methods to use:

1. Get an aisle seat
2. Get little or no sleep the night before
3. Take 2 over the counter (or Ambien) 1 hour before the flight

If you are fat, then it is going to suck anyways, but if you can fit in the seats, the sleeping pills kick in, the lack of sleep, etc. I wake up as the landing gear is touching down.

By body is so used to this now, that when I get on the plane, without sleeping pills, I start yawning and getting tired.

If your real good, your body will smeel the food, wake you up, let you eat, and then shut down again.

Big E, how the fuck are you going to fit into a coach seat? Are you crazy? Your shoulders are bigger than Magnus's and he barely fits in a coach seat.

You better buy 2 coach seats together bro if you can't get 1st class :)

That's good advice - I can't usually sleep on planes.. might try the Ambien though.

Uhh.. I don't [fit in coach]. Read my post again goofball.. =)

I already reserved an extra coach seat, but there's so much more to first class: horizontal seats, better food, personal entertainment, etc. :-/

Wow, thanks!!

San Diego -> Amsterdam.

Prefer Sept 14th through the 19th, but I'm flexible on the departure (13th, 12th, etc) and flexible on the return (20th, 21st, etc).

When I went 2 years ago I flew Delta and had the whole back row of the plane to myself. Easy to stretch out. Didnt sleep but was semi-comfy

He's right about the Ambien. I used to do that when I traveled overseas. One thing though... do *not* take 2 ambien an hour before the flight... you will black out and never find your plane :) Ambien only takes 20-30 minutes to kick in and if you are still walking around, you just black out.

Sly 08-08-2005 01:00 PM

I've flown first class a couple times and really didn't see what the big deal is, though they were only 4 hour domestic flights and I am only the size of your leg, haha. If I went to Europe I'm sure I would be looking at first or business class if and when possible, that flight would kill me.

By the way, what are horizontal seats?

LOL! Sorry bro my body is still recovering from the booze from Miami. Can't read no more ;)

See ya in Amsterdam!

DH

P.S. Is there a casino closeby the hotel???

Dirty F 08-08-2005 01:03 PM

What a waste of money flying first class.
I hate wasting money on hotels and airplanes.

I flew all over the world and economy class kinda sucks but i just slam a few whiskeys, plug in my earphones, watch a movie, get a inflatable thingy around my neck (dont know the name) and i sleep like a baby after a hour :)

Dirty F 08-08-2005 01:04 PM

Just make sure you are tired before the trip already.

This is saves you 3k.

DateDoc 08-08-2005 01:05 PM

Try PriceLine, http://www.priceline.com/flights/def...INK& AirASO=Y , I found one for $6907 for the both of you leaving 9/13 returning 9/21.

Spankys Teens 08-08-2005 01:07 PM

Hey Frank,'

what;s happenin here in A'dam?
Do i need to buy tickets

_mC_ 08-08-2005 01:08 PM

My :2 cents:, yes. Amsterdam alone, no show, is worth it.

BUT! If you have the means, you will enjoy your trip SO much more if you go first class... My trip from Miami to Detroit to Amsterdam and back via coach was horrible, but the ride back is easier with the proper pre-flight preparations. :pimp

DeanCapture 08-08-2005 01:09 PM

Maybe it's time to look into a MacandBumble corporate jet :thumbsup

Sometimes it works out like that, many times it doesn't.. I don't like to depend on "luck" when I travel. :-/

By the way, what are horizontal seats?

Anything over an hour and I'll get first class (usually through upgrades, but I'll buy them if I have to).

Try flying business/first outside the US - they really take care of you. Great food, good wines usually, individual TVs for each seat, etc. And never underestimate the free booze - going to Prague, my seat neighbor and I killed all the scotch on board, then proceded to kill all the whiskey on board, and finally all the champagne (drinking mimosas to sober up) as we pulled in.. needless to say, it was ugly.. (but fun!)

International business class has seats that go fully horizontal (like a bed) so you can actually get some sleep.

Icq or e-mail will do :) thanks

SixNine 08-08-2005 03:10 PM

sup dawg, one big motherfucker to another.
Get 3 seats. You can check in 8 hours early... roll to the airport solo and check in as soon as possible for emergency row seats... go home finish packing yada yada. I'd say that would be the most comfort besides free drinks and warm towels. :)

David D in the house!

Big E, depending on what airline it is see if they know what plane it is going to be. If it is the 2 level one then get the front seats upstairs on it, if it is the new ones that are one level then try to get the emergency exit row seats. They got a tiny bit more leg room but not much.

I fly Europe to Aus/NZ about once a year and always do coach and Im a big guy.

I see that someones already mentioned the sleeping pill trick.... that works every time for me.

Have you thought about trying London, Paris or Berlin?. Its about 45 mins from all places, and you might find better priced flights.

Yeah, I checked all kinds of connections.. (sigh)

If you have the time, I suggest you fly thru Iceland on Icelandair on the way to AMS, you can stopover for free in Iceland for up to 3 nights at no extra charge to your final destination. Icelandair is usually the cheapest airline to get to mainland Europe from the east coast (baltimore, JFK, boston etc) ..I have flown this way to AMS maybe 7-8 times.

Of course the biggest benefit for a stopover in Iceland is b/c the hottest women on the planet reside there. The place will blow your mind. Maybe you can solicit a few 6 foot Nordic blonde knock outs for Mac and Bumble :-)

The entertainment on the last few cross-continential flights I've been on have really been stellar. Even in coach, they have on demand movies and a large on demand cd selection. It's also nice to have real silverware, even going economy. Just call the airline or check their site to see what they have. But the seats won't be as comfortable.

But I'd personally rather save a few thousand and fly economy.

What are the prices you're finding now?

Best I could do was $3950 per ticket (two tickets).
