Peter Jennings death watch

Looks like Pete's not doing too good. Lung cancer. Apparently ABC news affiliates have been alerted to 'Prepare for the death of Peter Jennings'.

Another icon passing from when 'news' meant more than just 'he said she said', or outright advocacy and propoganda that passes for todays newsertainment. :(

Nothing on the mainstream yet, just a one liner on newsblues, but lung cancer can mess you up REAL quick. I knew a person who took 1 month from diagnosis to death, and it was a fuck of a way to go. Hope he doesn't suffer much as he goes. :Oh crap

Radik 08-06-2005 10:11 PM

bummer.. more bad news.

BiggleJones 08-06-2005 10:26 PM

Man...that always sucks to hear.

But I must say I havent been a fan of his since he wouldnt let Toby Keith perform on TV right after 9/11, because the line in his song wasnt politically correct. :2 cents:

demented 08-06-2005 10:28 PM

Damn that really sucks.. Lung cancer takes you out pretty quick..

xclusive 08-06-2005 10:37 PM

Hope he goes quick if he has to go cause that can be some painfull shit from what i've seen:(

jigg 08-06-2005 10:39 PM

If he's about to die, he's probably not in pain. Most likely drifting in and out of conciousness and probably doesn't recognize anyone anymore.

Sad way to go though

mardigras 08-07-2005 03:33 AM

If he's drifting in and out of consciousness, it's happened since yesterday.

ABC News colleagues on Friday sent a plane with birthday greetings over the home of Peter Jennings, who hasn't been seen on the air since announcing on April 5 that he had lung cancer.

It was the job of Jennings' wife to steer the veteran anchor to where he'd see the banner saying, "Happy Birthday, Peter -- love from all at `World News Tonight'" flying above his home outside of New York City.

His co-workers also taped birthday greetings sent via e-mail and viewers also participated in a "virtual birthday party" over the Web, the network said.

Jennings turned 67 on Friday.

Jennings responded by sending ice cream to "World News Tonight" staffers and calling in his thanks, a spokeswoman said. He also posted a message of thanks to viewers wishing him a happy birthday on ABC's message board.

"Your words -- as always -- are a great source of strength," Jennings wrote.

Although he continues to participate in planning and critiquing the show -- even engaging in a spirited argument recently over who should be named "person of the week" -- Jennings hasn't been in the office since May 23, said Jon Banner, "World News Tonight" executive producer.

"He and I had a very good conversation yesterday," Banner said. "We sort of talk, if not every day, then every other day. He's still very involved in the broadcast and giving his advice."

Charles Gibson and Elizabeth Vargas have shared duty as Jennings' sub.

"We've always told him and maintained that when he's ready to come back, all he has to do is give us 45 minutes' notice and we'll dust the chair off for him," Banner said. "We've constantly told him that, but right now he has other priorities."

When he told his viewers about his cancer diagnosis, Jennings admitted to one pressing concern: "I wonder if other men and women ask their doctors right away: `OK, doc, when does the hair go'?"

The answer so far: not yet.

Tat2Jr 08-07-2005 04:47 AM

I've missed him since he's been gone. I've watched him for years, and that Terry Moran who's kina replaced him is awful. I hate his little quips.

Furious_Female 08-07-2005 05:16 AM

2 conflicting stories here... :(

Sarah_Jayne 08-07-2005 07:23 AM

hope he is okay - I don't see him much now that I am over here but watching him work as a kid (I saw a special where he showed people how he prepares for interviews, etc) was one of the reasons I started getting interested in journalism and writing. Plus, I was always impressed a Canadian made it that big in American news :)

~Ray 08-07-2005 08:33 AM

uh oh, I liked him

polster 08-07-2005 09:06 AM

Thats shows.. smoking does not have one health benefit to it... Stop Smoking kids! :2 cents:

My dad died 3 weeks ago due to complications from lung cancer. He lived 3 years since it was diagnosed though. People are living a lot longer then they used to due to modern medicine. Its not an instant death sentance any more.

In the end the treatments wore him down and he passed. The cancer was actualy under control.

I hope Peters passing is painless.

Chong 08-07-2005 10:19 AM

:( :( my prayers go out to him

I hope science can cure that horrible disease some day soon :(

If it's in both of his lungs, he pretty much a write-off now, right?

crockett 08-07-2005 11:53 AM

Jennings turned 67 on Friday

QuaWee 08-07-2005 12:11 PM

wasnt he an avid smoker?

latinasojourn 08-07-2005 12:12 PM

classy guy who smoked like a chimney for years.

if you are a smoker do the right thing for yourself and your family. (i quit smoking cigars 10 years ago, after my kids kept hiding my a&c grenadiers.)

when all is said and done your most valuable possession is not the big house, the boat, and the fancy cars.

it is your health.

I can't cite the source cuz I don't remember where I heard it, but to my knowledge its gone into metastatis and is now systemic... which basically means he's screwed.

Very sad news indeed.

tungsten 08-07-2005 03:25 PM

damn sorry to hear such news :(

KRL 08-07-2005 04:01 PM

You have to be out of your mind to smoke cigarettes.

Might as well use Raid for your breath spray while your at. Same poisons.

abetech 08-07-2005 04:16 PM

Might just be chemo kicking the crap out of him. If he survives it he might make it. But the chemical compound that is the main ingredient for chemo (cis-platinum I think) actually stops your cells from reproducing. Basically its a race to see which dies first, the cancer or you.

Furious_Male 08-07-2005 08:45 PM

RIP Mr. Jennings.

rickholio 08-07-2005 09:51 PM

NEW YORK -- Peter Jennings, the suave, Canadian-born broadcaster who delivered the news to Americans each night in five separate decades, died Sunday. He was 67. Jennings, who announced in April that he had lung cancer, died at his New York home, ABC News President David Westin said late Sunday.

With Tom Brokaw and Dan Rather, Jennings was part of a triumvirate that dominated network news for more than two decades, through the birth of cable news and the Internet. His smooth delivery and years of international reporting experience made Jennings particularly popular among urban dwellers.

End of an era. Here's to you, peter. :glugglug

tristan_D 08-08-2005 02:06 AM
