Which party is the one that wants smaller government?

Not since the Lyndon Johnson administration has congress spent money so recklessly and acted as if deficits didn't matter.

The democrats are no better mind you, but the republicans saying "vote for us we'll balance the budget and we'll stop the runaway train of big government" is pure and utter bullshit.

The problem is incumbency, we need term limits IMHO to stop the pork.

Typical politicians now they all can go home and run for reelection saying "see I got you this and that"

Reagan and Bush Sr. ran up huge deficits and increased (not decreased) the size of government. Clinton reduced the deficit, and now Dubya is running up the biggest budgets of all time and financing it with record deficits while allowing his cronies (especially the oil industry and the military industrial complex) to suck up huge profits at the expense of the working class people of this country.

The American people need to remove their blinders and wipe the sleepers from their eyes. The Republicans have used social issues to divide this country for far too long, while giving huge tax breaks to the rich. They lie about being against big government, they lie about the deficit, and they lied about the war in Iraq.

Both parties are just as guilty of this IMHO...and the republicans are out of excuses.

The republicans used to claim we had huge deficits during the Reagan and Bush administrations because the Democrats controlled congress and they were the party of big government and wanted people dependent on government so they could keep their jobs.

Then when the budget was balanced during the Clinton administration the republicans claimed it had nothing to do with Clinton, it was because the republicans controlled congress.

Well now the republicans control both branches and have for quite some time, and we're in worse (fiscal) shape than we were at any time in the past 20 years.

The problem is incumbency IMO. They go home and say "I got you this road and this bridge and this military base so vote for me"

What I find funny is that when the republicans first took control of congress in 94, most of them ran on a platform that included term limits.
Then the leadership, namely Tom Delay and Dick Armey went on record saying "Well now that republicans have control we don't think term limits are really necessary"

Bunch of fucking hypocrites, every one of them. (With the notable exception of John McCain)

Clinton cut the defense budget 800 Billion Dollars (Which the dumb ass Republicans went along with) and increased spending 650 Billion on domestic programs during his term. Clinton and the GOP didn't cut anything from gov't except defense spending.

So the fact is dollars were really moved away from defense to domestic programs and some of the savings paid down the debt.

Clinton also raised taxes, which was a necessary evil, and that raised the funds needed to balance the budget. (And go figure it didn't hurt the economy at all.....and the people in the highest income brackets saw their incomes increase far more than what they lost in higher taxes)

The military budget is the most pork laden of all government departments and it could still use alot more cuts IMO.
