Question: How much bandwidth does Yahoo Instant Messenger take up?
Anyone know how much bandwidth a chat client like YIM takes up? Trillian? Let's say you're chatting with 20 people max at the same time... how much BW will that burn?
Thanks in advance, Gene aka $5 Sub |

sounds like you plan on mimicing yahoo's YIM protocol from a server & need to know how much b/w you're going to burn.

very little, probably no more than 1kByte/sec...

text only is very low BW
add hi rez webcam with fast refresh and voicechat and you need maybe 300kbs BW both ends for good audio quality and no hanging. most efficient to put both parties on "invisible". best audio will come with headset use. reduce size of webcam image to small and you save about 75kbs. does not work so good with satellitte systems (direcway, etc) speed should be the same both up and down. |
