timeshares.. where's the value?

So.. my in-laws buy timeshares by the six pack. I can?t seem to seem to understand the value / return on such an investment

Does anyone here have a clue why these even exist? (Sucker born every second...?)

Why would anyone pay $32,000 for a 1 week a year timeshare, and on top of that, have to pay a $800 yearly maintenance fee?

Is there a tax benefit? Any benefit?

To go there for vacation?

Why not get a hotel room for a week @ $800-$1300?

You would need to go use your timeshare for over 40 years to make up the cost.

You would never be able to sell it for nearly what you bought it for.

The few people that I know that have been roped into the hardsell of timeshares of any sort seem to be people who for the most part aren't financially stable. They are lured with the promise of a 'free weekend'.

I have one friend who pays $175 a month for 15 years to Trendwest to get one week of 'resort' time each year. I can pick much better places to stay with the $2100 he pays in each year. And if you want out of it.. forget it. If you fall behind on payments, you can't transfer it to someone else without catching them back up and paying the transfer fee.

As for the condos..who wants to go to the same place every year? Not me.

persian kitty, you can exchange places with others, but generally speaking the whole issue is a kind of "scam". The ones that introduced this concept made rich in 0 time. They spent many $$ to promote it in every single country targeting people they can afford the expense easily.

i feel some time shares are well worth the money all depends who you buy from i spent 34,000 on disney time share for there villas but we can also gotto any disney resort in the world by using our points each year. and if you like to travel you save money in the long run.

the time shares that sound to good to be true most likely are not true .

better alternative to time shares is buying points,,,

buying points ables you to be more flexible to whever you wanna go,,, you are not fixed to one locations,,

there is a tax and equity advantage with buying points also
because they give you a title just like owning real property,,,

if anyone has no problems with saying "NO" to hard salesmen you should take advantage of their Cheap trips,,,, friend of mine does it all the time,,, i been to mytle beach, hilton head, orlando stayed in nice hotels with park tickets for just under $150!!

you contact me if you got any questions to the point system

so you're the one calling me all day trying to sell me points!!

Just start a Vacation Club account at your bank and put a percentage of your pay in there so you can go on a different nice vacation every year or mulitple times a year.
