Extreme religious-nationalist opponents of Mr Sharon's Gaza plan have described the removal of Jews from the territory as a crime against God and the Jewish people, while influential rabbis have called on soldiers to refuse to carry out the evacuation.

Last month, far-right religious activists delivered an ancient death curse on the prime minister reminiscent of a similar curse invoked against Yitzhak Rabin months before the late Labour prime minister was assassinated by a Jewish extremist in 1994.
