Thinking about movine off shore?? Put in your info if you already are!
Ok. I have seen a bunch of threads about trying to get info about moving affshore. So, anyone that ives off shore, please post in this thread to help thise considering it.
I will be posting about Mexico. I live just south of the border. My experiances may not be the same as yours, and are therefore not right ir wrong. There are some things to consider before you pack up and move. 1. where would you like to go? 2. what do you plan to take with you? 3. how do you plan to make a living? 4. is what you do legal? 5. Will you have enough money to get back if the new country doesn not work out the way you planned? 6. do you need a visa 7. can you bring your pets 8. can you bring your car. 9. how do you plan to do banking? 10. what is the cost of living. 11. do you understand that there is NOT a walmart on every corner? 12. if you have children where and how will they be schooled? 13. Is there high speed connection? 14. What do I need to purchase land? These are some of the things to consider. We live in Mexico, just south of the border. I will hit each number in order with a brief statment. 1. where would you like to go? We chose Mexico, because of being close to the water and the border! 2. what do you plan to take with you? We brought our clothes, computers, and a few furniture items to avoid the import fees. We are Americans, and therefore rich in the Eyes of the Mexican government. 3. how do you plan to make a living? We do porn, and also the mainstream work. We are also working on opening a new business. 4. is what you do legal? Semi legal. It is done in the home, so I dont need a licnese. 5. Will you have enough money to get back if the new country doesn not work out the way you planned? Yes. Load the truck, pay the 2.40$ toll on the express way, sit in 3 hours of border traffic, and I am back in the US. 6. do you need a visa? No. Providing you dont go south of Ensenada. If you do, a tourist visa is 20$ and you can buy it when you get to the destination. 7. can you bring your pets? Yes. Bring their shot record. Or get the shots in Mexico for 1/3 the price. 8. can you bring your car. If you plan on living more than 66 miles fomr the border you should import your car. there are restrictions on this. But, if you say you are on vacation, and have a tourist visa, you can be anywhere in Mexico. 9. how do you plan to do banking? We have a bank in the US, and one in Mexico. To get an account in Mexico, we had to have an FM3. which is like a green card in the US. but a lot easier to get. 10. what is the cost of living. Cost of living is cheap. Electricity for a 3/3 is about 60 to 80 dollars a month. GOOD beef is about 9 dollars a kilo. 2.2 pounds. and out rent of an older house is 420$. A friend bought a very nice 3/3 in a great community for 135k. 3 blocks from the beach. Gas for the car is at about 2.20$ per gallon. Compare to San Diego for about 2.60$ a gallon. 11. do you understand that there is NOT a walmart on every corner? the closest walmart is either in San Diego or Mexicali. We do have a Sams and a Costco, but they do not sell all of the same things. And the quality of some of the items that you recognize is not the same. 12. if you have children where and how will they be schooled? We will be home schooling our son, as the school system here sucks major ass. 13. Is there high speed connection.? Yes. With the phone company you can get dsl, with the cable comepany you can get a cable modem, and there is a company that offers radio. 14. What do I need to purchase land? In Mexico, you will need an FM3, which is easy to get, and a bank trust is you plan to live withing 66 miles of the border or the water. the bank trust is about 2k, and after that about 300 a year. the bank actually owns the home or land, but you can sell it, transfer it or will it to someone. No restrictions on the trust. But there are few home loans given here, and when they do it is 18 to 26%. Now I am sure that I lef a lot out, and I will add more as the thread goes. If anyone has any questions, you can hit me on ICQ. |

I am surprised that there is not more interest in this thread. Oh well. Wasted my time.
|

I'd love to live in a country where i can fuck up & pay my way outta jail. |
You did not waste your time it was a great post and very good to hear somebody that actually has the experiance. My wife has a lot of family down there so I know the rules pretty well but with so many people always wanting to get off shore this is a great post and thank you.

Rent: 400$ electricity: 40$ per month. Connection : 75$ with the comapny that uses radio. Gas for my truck: 200$ Gas for the house: 60$ Food for the house: 150 to 200$ eating out ranges from 1$ for a taco to 30 or 40$ for a meal in a nice place. |
Buying out of trouble from the cops, 20$ to a few K. dependsing on what you did. CASH ONLY!
I head of some people that got out of a DUI for 4 dollars. |
So in reality you can live and work in Mexico and drive to CA when you need to shoot content. That wouldnt be so bad, electric sounds very cheap do you have AC in your house?
|
i spend $16 a month in police bribes here, that's 8 traffic infringements =)

pornguy what was your reason for moving to mexico in th first place
|
how about crime ?
do you feel safe down there, or do you live in a house surrounded by barbed wire just like we do here in South Africa? Also how do you get thir version of the Green Card? You said it was easy but what exactly do you mean by easy, do you juast pay you way to getting one, or do you have to do something else? |
you make it too complicated, sell EVERYTHING. take a backpack with the essentials and go exploring for a place you like and settle down and reprioritize when youre there.
when you try to move your life with you, you wont find what youre looking for. - Seth |

What a shame this post turned to shit - probably because the poster wanted us to deliver it to him on a plate.
I'm not in the US to start with and none of my business is here. I have both Euro and US companies (both pay tax and obey the law there), I host primarily in Malaysia - cheap bandwidth but have a backup in the US. And I source content from independent photographers all over the world - complying with 2257 by getting proof of ID before payment. I'm sure if you wanted to avoid any of the rules it wouldn't take too much creativity. |
you have to redefine offshore, you just moved. Something completely diffrent.

Excellent thread, thanks I'm thinking you must be on the Pacific side of Mexico right .. below California? I'm in Texas and on this side of Mexico (gulf side) the cost of living is much less. First I'd like to say that NOBODY wants to live in a central area border town around here. There is an all out war going on between the drug lords and the local police. I'm talking rocket launchers and everything. The national army has been there for well over 6 months trying to regain order. Having said that, in places like Matamoros, Tampico there are no problems. You can rent a 4/4 house near the ocean for about $200. There are even retirement communities in Mexico where the only non-white you will see around are household staff. For 40k a year you can literally live like a king. Now if you go to Cancum, Cozumel or Belize (or on the other side, Mazetlan, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco).. well thats a whole different story. Tourist areas are expensive. |
great info thanks :thumbsup

You will NEVER be able to really move from the long arm of the US. One way or another they can get you. Remember that Visa is a US based corporation, and they have federally issued licenses, that can be revoked. But I know that a lot of people feel that they US is less likely to send someone to Mexico, Panama, or South America to check 2257. |

the war that someone spoke about in the border towns along Arizona and Texas, has very little to do with Americans. You could still get killed in a drive by, but that can happen in NY! We have a fence around the house that we live in, but if you want in, you can just climb the fence. Then you have to face my dogs, but we have had them for years. Most of the nice communities here have a fence around them, and 24 hour security, and the crime is just like in the states. You are more likely to know someone here that has had a burglary to thier house, than in the states, but that is because people are in concentrated areas. General Safety!! We have walked the streets in Tijuana many times ar 2 and 3 in the morning. Very rarely will something happen to you. You car is a different story, so having an alarm is a great idea. And Lock the thing. |

btw food $1500 is just me because I only eat out...
|
WOW. you scared the shit out of me with that amount. We dont eat out often. My wife loves to cook, and is a great cook, so we eat at home a lot. But there are a few very nice places here that we go to sometimes. We are sick of fucking tacos here. They are nowhere near as good as tacobell.

PG,
I had this thread bookmarked. Thanks for the post. How about an update since the past 4 months? Any changes to your answers to your initial questions? |
