laptops - best bang for the buck
so what would you guys suggest?
|
I just bought a fully loaded Chembook 2370 (asus z70v) from discountlaptops.com. Comes tomorrow.
For $2300, I hope it blows away the similar Dell I was looking at for around $4000+. |
I am quite happy with my Acer Travelmate 4501i.

I have a beefed up Inspiron 9300 and I recommend it.
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/prod...=19&l=en&s=dhs It's fast, it's a desktop replacement, it kicks ass. I bought an extra batter, now I can watch 3 DVDs with the 2 batteries, or work for 6-9 hours on regular things using the battery. 256MB NVIDAŽ GeForce? Go 6800 video card is great too for gaming. I've had no problems. It's BIG! But that's not that big of an issue to me. Also I checked google for "Dell Coupons" and ended up buying it from the Small Business section of Dell with a 30% discount. Only Complaint: I have the 8x dual layered DVD burner. However with that DVD burner the actual CD-RW part burns at a max speed of 24x. WTF Sony, WTF is wrong with you? The only thing I would change: I would get their 'complete care' warranty that covers spills, dropping it, running it over with a car, etc. Why? Because I had no issue with my 10" Fujitsu because it was small, but this 17" laptop seems to want to me to spill coffee on it and wierd things like that. |
Dell d610 or the current equivalent is the way to go. Kick ass machine, great price.

Chek out Tiger Direct.. They have had some killer deals on AMD-64 laptops lately.

If you have any local computer/laptop stores check them out. I needed a cheap laptop just to use in bed or on the couch. I got a Dell Latitude 900MHZ P3, 512mb RAM, 20GB HD, 2 batteries and a leather carrying case for $250 at Laptop World.. It also has a warranty :) I'm very happy with it. I use it in the bedroom everynight. It also helps to have wireless too, I couldn't imagine not having wireless. I can lay in bed, go out by the lake, chill on the balcony or take it in the shitter.

I was all for Dell too, until I priced the machine I wanted. I priced a couple mentioned in this thread and they were all over $3000. Here's what I ordered from discountlaptops for $2100.
Total Price: $2,105.00 ---------- 15.4" WSXGA (1680x1050) Wide -Screen Active Matrix Display 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium-M (760) Processor (Sonoma / 2 MB L2 Cache / 533 FSB) Standard CPU Thermal Compound Paste 64 MB Dedicated DDR2 - Ati Radeon X600 PCI-Express Video Card 2 GB DDR2 (533 MHz) Dual Channel Memory Configuration (1 GB x 2) 60 GB Hard Drive (7200 RPM) 8X DVD / 24x10x24 CD-RW Combo Drive w/ Softwares Internal 56k Modem Internal IntelPRO 2915ABG Wireless Ethernet/Lan (802.11 a+b+g) 8-cell Smart Lithium Ion Battery Add 2nd battery (swaps with CD Bay) Built-in 4-in-1 card reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO) S-video out, 4 USB (2.0), 1 PCMCIA, IR, IEEE Firewire AC Adapter w/ power cord Universal Auto Adapter Free Deluxe Carry Case 6 pounds. Anyway. That's my $.02. |

It just depends on what you want. Do you want something that's heavy, has poor battery life but works like a desktop, or something that's lighter, has longer battery life but also not as savage as a full-blown desktop machine? Once you figure that out here's your factors: Desktop replacement = cost + as close to desktop performance parts as possible. Weight, size, screen size / rez and battery life are moot. Mobile = cost + screen size + battery life + performance + weight + other stuff I'm not thinking about. :2 cents: |
I picked up a HP Pavilion 5040 about a year ago. Best laptop i have had in years. Not to pricey either. :2 cents:

i am planning to buy Dell Inspiron XPS
http://www.laptopadvisor.com/images/dell-xps.jpg The Dell Inspiron XPSicon laptop computer is for serious gamers or other kind of mobile computing users who require power hungry processors to run graphics intense and other demanding applications. If you really fancy laptop gaming on the move, this is the perfect beast. |
