Any joined the Utah/Mich. anti spam list?

Has anyone joined the utah and michigan anti spam listing thing yet?
I was looking at it and its 500$ a year and you have to abide by their terms to use the list and if you dont use the list you could get slammed.

SmokeyTheBear 08-02-2005 07:11 PM

Tytan 08-02-2005 07:14 PM

venus 08-02-2005 07:43 PM

no they are not giving out a list, they are selling a list, 500$ a year.
if you have not read the new law that went into effect last month you should. its very similar to the do not call list for phones.

I guess we will see in time whether Utah and Michigan are serious about the prison bit..

I have known about it since last month, but just now got around to looking to see how much it was since it will affect me, I wish I knew how many people were on the list also.

Which state is the $500 for? Utah? I understood that Michigan was going to charge up to .03 per email address, and Utah was undetermined.

Quickdraw 08-02-2005 08:51 PM

Nevermind, it seems they charge per email you check, not the size of their database.
So if you have 5000 email addresses, you have to check them all against their 'do not mail' list, even if they only have 50 on their list.
Each state charges between .005 and .007 cents per email address you run through their system.

What a crock. I don't see much good coming from this.

according to this site
http://www.isipp.com/iadb.php
its 500$ for a year... I am going to check the one you listed

damn, the hawks are comming out of the woodwork, what it looks like are several new anti spam sites popping up that urge states to make a no spam list so that they can make money.

Quickdraw 08-02-2005 09:10 PM

The url I posted is the Official site linked from the respective States site about it.

The url you posted is more a whitelist type service that says they will do their best for all of your emails to get through places like Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.. They did have information posted about it, but they only say that their whitelist service will let the other email services know that you comply with the new laws.

venus 08-02-2005 09:16 PM

overall I think its a joke and a poorly made law.
it gives no leeway if the surfer comes to an adult site and puts his address on a list them complains about it.

I can see allot of the religious fanatics doing that crap.
I had a guy today write and told me to stop sending mail to his 10 yr old sons email address.
I wrote back and told him to stop lying and that there was a war against religious fanatics. then gave him the date, time and IP address of the people who added their address and told him not to lie to me any more.

Quickdraw 08-02-2005 09:58 PM

I understand what you are saying about it being a joke and I imagine it will be challenged. BUT it's already in effect, how long till they actually enforce the first case is a good question.

Michigan-
Quote:

Marketers who fail to comply with the law face criminal penalties of up to three years in jail, and criminal fines of up to $30,000. In addition, marketers may face civil penalties of up to $5,000 per message sent in violation of the law, to a maximum of $250,000 per day.
Utah-
Quote:

Marketers who fail to comply with the law face potential felony charges and civil and criminal penalties from $1,000 to $5,000 per message sent in violation of the law.
Applies to both-
Quote:

Civil suits may be filed by the 'State" attorney general, the "State" Division of Consumer Protection, Internet service providers, and parents on behalf of their children
Interesting way they have to check the database too. Equivalent to:
Marketer- "How about [email protected]"
Utah - "Nope"
Mich -"Nope"
Marketer "How about this one"
Ut-"Nope"
Mi-"No"
and so on... almost comedic :helpme

venus 08-02-2005 10:48 PM

they can only enfore it if people are actually adding their email addresses to it, if people dont know about it then they cant be on it - majority of people seem to use disposible addresses anyway, like hotmail or yahoo.

if only 100 people have added their addresses then its a waste of time to use.

nofx 08-02-2005 10:50 PM

seems like a stupid law passed to just to generate some extra $ for the state

someone needs money

they will fucking suck it from anywhere they can...

venus 08-02-2005 10:52 PM

have you found out how people add their email addresses to the list?
I have not found anywhere where people can easily add their addresses to the list

Your Mothers Secret 08-03-2005 12:02 AM

are you people really concerned, are you spammers?

Hardcore spammers won't give a shit about their stupid laws.

venus 08-03-2005 12:26 AM

I am concerned because I am not a spammer but I run a large mailing list, all opt in, but opt in does not mean the person won't optin and then try to report you. Its a war and the religious fanatics, like the ones who strap bombs to themselves, will try about anything.
