Vancouver

Hey guys, there was a thread here the other day about Vancouver and I've heard a lot of nice things about the area. I was trying to get some info about the city from people who live there. My Mother is thinking of travelling & staying there for a while so info or links on neighborhoods, housing and life there in general would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Once you go to Vancouver, you stay... it's a very hard city to leave.

JohnW 08-02-2005 01:43 PM

Vancouver is a great city. Expensive, but a great place to live.

;)

That's what I've heard. I definitely want to check it out myself as well...

You're just asking for general information about Vancouver?

Those are some great resource pages. Your mother will enjoy Vancouver, it's beautiful here! Where she wants to stay depends on a few things though. Does she want to be close to downtown? On a mountain? Near a lake? On a farm? You need to tell us some more about your mother's likes and dislikes before we can really help you I think.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies...

Her main criteria is that she doesn't want to have to use a car. So a city area or locale with a good transit system or easy walking distances would be ideal. She is very interested in being around culture, meeting people and learning about the city and country... Otherwise she is flexible.

Thanks.

Downtown Vancouver or the Westside for sure then. Tranist isn't too bad downtown, it's not as good in the suburbs though. False Creek is a very nice part of downtown Vancouver. These areas will be among the most expensive areas in the Greater Vancouver area to live in.

fire works tomorrow
fireworks saturday...
should be good for a fight or 20

Mighty Chin 08-02-2005 03:10 PM

Skytrain is great for transit. Gets you to downtown fast if you're out in the burbs.

Ok, sounds good. Are there any areas that you would recommend staying away from, i.e. safety wise?

Elli 08-02-2005 03:27 PM

SkyTrain doesn't run everywhere, and the corridor doesn't run through the nicest neighbourhoods. I prefer the 601 bus line :)

Well, naturally I prefer my car...

Downtown/westside/kits/south granville/commercial drive is all great for walking to places.

East vancouver around Knight St. can be a little rough, and the Main St/Hastings St. corner and Cordova is the armpit of Vancouver, but just a few blocks away is Gastown, which is trendy.

Surrey has high crime rates due to lower income, younger population, etc. But there are nice parts, too. Same with New Westminster. I suggest her to go walkabout for a while to get a feel for what she likes.

Overall Vancouver is a very safe city. There are some parts, in Surrey and Hastings area like Elli mentioned, that probably aren't that safe at night. There's very little reason for you Mother to be in those areas at night anyway so it's not going to be a big issue.

Hey Makingcoin, she is still getting all her travel plans together but a furnished place would be ideal. As far as the time frame, it would be from 1 month on depending on what she is able to find. I know she is interested in staying put for a few months or longer if the area feels right.

If you have any info on places to rent, feel free to hit me up.

Thanks in advance.

K, there is a place on 12th Ave that would be perfect for her. Its a bed and breakfest type place that is fully furnished and relatively cheap. Close to downtown and major bus routes/skytrain. Let me grab the info for you.

Digibucks 08-02-2005 07:59 PM

I am willing to let someone stay for free at my place on Beach Ave. downtown/English Bay for approx. 4 weeks starting late October in return for looking after my cat while I am away. The place is nice and the location cannot be beat anywhere in Vancouver. My email is hershie - at - shaw . ca

BradShaw 08-02-2005 08:48 PM

Vancouver is great. Only thing that stopped me from buying a pad there is all the bums.

That is an awesome find, thanks. I think that is exactly the type of setup she is looking for and the prices are very reasonable... I forwarded her the info.

The more I'm reading about Vancouver I want to go check it out myself! The views and sights look amazing...

Sounds like a nice arrangement...

One of my favorite cities anywhere.

If I were a single man I'd have become a citizen & local of Van a few years ago.

One day I still might just make that one way trip.

:thumbsup
