I've been to Vancouver Island. Very beautiful place. Very clean and you are close to the mountains as well as the sea.

sherie 08-02-2005 07:30 AM

The Island rocks! If ever I move back to BC, I think the Island is where I will end up!

hershie 08-02-2005 08:16 AM

I went to Tofino a few weeks ago and went out on a whale watching trip for a couple of hours and saw:

humpback whale
grey whale
2 kinds of sea lions
seals
dolphins
bald eagles
bears

It is just amazing on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Dollarmansteve 08-02-2005 08:18 AM

Speaking of Tofino, I was there last year for a friend of mine's wedding. Its a beautiful place... the beaches, the big trees, the ocean.. its all good. Bring your surfboard!!

Vancouver voted best island to visit in North America

CanWest News Service
Saturday, July 16, 2005

Vancouver Island is the best island to visit in North America, according to the latest Travel + Leisure magazine readers' 10th-annual survey.

The island ranked sixth world-wide in the survey by what's arguably the top U.S. consumer travel magazine. The good news for Vancouver Island tourism doesn't stop there. The only three Canadian hotels on the survey's top 100 worldwide are from the island.

The survey's impact has been felt even before the August issue hits the stands, according to Deirdre Campbell of Tartan Communications, a Victoria public relations firm specializing in the travel industry. The phone has been ringing at the Malahat's Aerie Resort since it was among those featured in a preview of the awards earlier this week on NBC's Today Show.

"People are calling, and saying 'where's Vancouver Island?' and "how do I get there?' " said Ms. Campbell, who has The Aerie as a client.

"We truly couldn't afford to buy this advertising," said Tourism Victoria's Melissa McLean even though Victoria, at ninth spot, lags four behind Vancouver as a North American destination.

"It's very significant because the U.S. market is on decline, so any exposure we get is wonderful," Ms. Campbell said.

Travel + Leisure subscribers rated islands on natural attractions, activities and sights, restaurants and food, people, and value. They evaluated hotels on rooms and facilities, location, service, restaurants and food, and value.

Sweet! Get your ass over here Bro!

and yes, Victoria is an incredible place to live, nothing like it anywhere else in canada, trust me on this one. I've lived all over Canada, and I'm staying here!
I don't know anywhere else a guy can go fishing, skiing, golfing and whoring all on the same day!

RuthB 08-02-2005 08:52 AM

yep, same, live here too.. the Island is great, beautiful, nature, ski-ing, golfing (TONS of golf courses!), and with the ocean never too far away you just can't beat it.

Are you planning on moving here? Or coming to visit?

austinth 08-02-2005 08:56 AM

here's the start of my day here on the island, im just rolling out of bed, literally - wireless, look out my window to see how the ocean looks, grab a coffee and take my dog for a walk in the woods, then hit the hottub.

gotta run!

The Stickman 08-02-2005 09:00 AM

I was there 15 yrs ago to go Salmon fishing.

Best Fishing Ever!!! :thumbsup

Tala 08-02-2005 09:18 AM

Vancouver ROCKS. I loved visiting when I lived in Washington. :thumbsup

hershie 08-02-2005 09:25 AM

A wierd thing for me is when I meet someone from the Island, I think "nice person, down-to-earth, someone I could trust". Not sure why but I just have this perception that people from VI are more friendly laid-back...compared to people from Toronto, Vancouver...as a big generalization.

No kidding. Victoria is one nice city. I love downtown where the museums are... Just really nice and clean.

CybermedAndy 08-02-2005 09:41 AM

I can't imagine living anywhere else

:thumbsup

rickholio 08-02-2005 09:42 AM

I lived in victoria for around 10 years... nice place. We used to say that victoria was for "the newly wed and the nearly dead", because of the visibly obvious age groups there.

It's a little too sleepy for my tastes, though. Seems like they roll up the streets at 9pm, and after hours entertainment you can find is a bit of a crap shoot. If you're looking for world class night life, don't expect to find it on the island. I moved to vancouver and it was much more my speed. Still, living in victoria means that vancouver (and whistler) are just a few hours away by ferry, so you can get the best of both. Good luck getting on the ferry when symphony of fire or a major holliday happens tho. :winkwink:

It's a beautiful place to live... very very green, and generally lacks that brown haze on the skyline. Crime is low even by canadian standards and there's a surprisingly diverse collection of ethnic food and cultural offerings. And yes, it is ground zero for the best chronic on the planet, so if you're down with the sickness it's the #1 place to be. :thumbsup

BigRod 08-02-2005 10:08 AM

I'm in Vancouver but love to hit the island for R & R!

Validus 08-02-2005 10:10 AM

Fishing, Hunting, Skiing, Relaxing... Vancouver Island is great... a little tiny bit too much rain.. but... I guess... its not all that bad. DUring the summer months it is warm anyhow.

dcortez 08-02-2005 10:45 AM

I've been enjoying Vancouver Island (South, Mid, and North) for over 20 years.

The Comox Valley (north) is one of the fastest growing areas for years.

BC gets a lot of rain year-round (like Washington state), but the pristine scenery makes up for it big time. There is a mountain range up the middle and tons of accessible coast both sides. An hour's drive will get you out of civillization and into real wilderness with the full gamut of wildlife (bears, cougars).

North Vancouver Island (Campbell River and up) is a bit of a closet hiding the logging rape/pillage years. If you peek in behind the thin 'landing strip' of trees along the highway, you will see how much of the island had been stripped naked and the replanted forests don't come close to replacing what was taken over the past decades.

Fishing is awesome up/down island.

You can even surf off the coast of Tofino (kind of).

I lived in many parts of North America (Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, San Franciso, Oakland, Silicon Valley), and as far as North America goes (esp. with political climate below the 49th now), Vancouver Island is #1!

If you're coming from a major urban center, you may want to give yourself a couple days to slow down and get into the island way of things.

Nanaimo is a little strange, but... I guess it is just as nice as every where else on the island... once you get to know it a little.
