Do u know how to do this math problem?

2. Two cars leave St. Louis from exactly the same spot at exactly the same time, one traveling west at 60 mph and the other traveling east at 40 mph. How long does it take before the cars are 180 miles apart?

A. 1 hour 18 minutes
B. 1 hour 28 minutes
C. 1 hour 38 minutes
D. 1 hour 48 minutes
E. 2 hours

No clue, we have people called 'accountants' to do math related stuff :glugglug

Without an explanation (I hated proofs), I believe the answer is D.

D was my guess, but that's all a guess.

I used to be good at these. Like 7 years ago in highschool. :(

It has to be D,

Its the only logical awnser,

After 1 hour they will be 100miles appart,
After 1.5 hour they will be 150miles appart,
After 2 hours they will be 200miles appart,

thaifan99 08-01-2005 01:17 PM

yes the answer is D

100 miles per hour....1.8 hours

azguy 08-01-2005 01:19 PM

D is the right answer

After Shock Media 08-01-2005 01:20 PM

E.
Car one had to stop and get some donuts.
Car two had to go back home after 5 minutes because the female passenger decided she liked the other pair of shoes better.

chadglni 08-01-2005 01:21 PM

D. What is difficult about it?

I would say "D"...

Here is how I got it:

You don't know the amount of time so call that 'x'

one car going 40mph and the other going 60mph and a total of 180miles

so
(40MPH *Time(X)) + (60MPH *Time(X)) = 180 miles
40X + 60X =180

100X = 180

X=1.8hours

0.8 hours equals 48minutes (0.8 X 60) so total time is 1.8hours or 1hour and 48minutes

Proof: (40)1.8 + 60(1.8) = 180miles
That means 40MPH car went a total of 72miles and the 60MPH car went 108miles = Total distance apart is 180miles

Hope this helps.. :)

Yeah, that's what I mean about proofs.

I can look at most math problems and work them out.

Just don't ask me to explain how the hell I got the answer. :winkwink:

JuiceMonkey 08-01-2005 01:34 PM

Yep the answer is D, not sure why I had to figure it out and not just scroll down for the fucking formula.

Yes its D

e-god 08-01-2005 01:44 PM

(40/60)*108+(60/60)*108=180

1 hour 48 minutes=108 minutes

DateDoc 08-01-2005 01:50 PM

the easiest way to to it since they are travelling in opposite directions is add the two speeds together to get a total speed then divide the distance by the speed.

60+40=100mph
180 miles/100 mph=1.8 hours which equals 1 hour 48 minutes.

The answer is F. Get out of the dark ages and switch to the metric system.

:)

I took algebra back then and we tackled how such problems can be solved. Motion problems is what they call it. Too bad I already forgot it.

ROFL!! I vote for this one :1orglaugh

wedouglas 08-01-2005 05:45 PM

oh man. if you cant do that, i think you need to go back to school.

heres a tip though. just try each answer by multiplying their speeds by the time in hours. as in 1.5 hours = 1 hour and 30 minutes. then add them together.

reynold 08-01-2005 05:56 PM

I'll take C. My closest estimated time. ;)
