"A hearing on the prearranged, Chapter 11 filing by Atkins Nutritionals Inc. was scheduled for Monday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court"

Let's hope your hearts don't decide to file chapter 11.

DamageX 08-01-2005 11:52 AM

Looks like people will finally be able to eat carbs again, without feeling guilty.

candyflip 08-01-2005 11:52 AM

KMart was bankrupt too a few years back and now they own Sears.

Atkins has been around for years and will continue. The "fad" phase has just died down.

High Plains Drifter 08-01-2005 11:52 AM

Whatever, brah, I'll be down at the In and Out Burger getting my hamburger with a lettuce bun.

BradM 08-01-2005 11:55 AM

I lost 100lbs on a variation of it.

Was it the "eat less, excercise more" variation?

TheDoc 08-01-2005 11:57 AM

Simple enough.. It was the stupidest diet in the world. People will buy into anything to lose weight. They seem to forget it?s all about eating right, smaller portions, no junk (soda, candy, fastfood, etc) and exercise.. The secret is out!

People always want the quick solution.. No way to quickly be healthy.

Was it the all bacon diet? Or the all red meat diet? Because I tried those too and they didn't work.

I have been losing weight, but I've been doing the hard way. I just eat less than I used to. Instead of 3 cheese burgers.. I just eat 1.

tony286 08-01-2005 11:58 AM

my father lost 70 lbs on it is off half his medications because of it . First off Atkins is dead , this is the company that makes the lo carb products. The reason they are having a problem is because so many other companies make lo carb products now better tasting and cheaper. Lo carb is far from dead.

bdld 08-01-2005 11:59 AM

diets are just ways for authors to make money anyway

mrthumbs 08-01-2005 12:01 PM

Id figured atkins as the number one dieting term would be doing very well.. wow.

JuiceMonkey 08-01-2005 12:13 PM

not going to end though..
there is 100 spin off's of atkins..
Atkins actually STOLE a very popular bodybuilding diet and modified it to make it shitty.

Research "TKD" or "CKD" diets...

fuzebox 08-01-2005 12:14 PM

Come on people... The diet doesn't "require" you to eat the fattiest foods you can find... You can do it just fine with low-fat low-carb foods like egg whites, poultry, fish, etc.

Carbs you don't burn turn into sugar which turns into fat. I don't get how anyone can say the diet is "bullshit" or "doesn't work"... It's not the best out there, but it sure as hell does work, especially when combined with excercise, and a lot quicker than just "eating less junk food".

Exactly... When I did the diet before it became popular, there were still cheaper alternatives out there... The 3-Carb bars were $1 cheaper than the atkins bars, there were cheaper protein powders, and I just bought regular chicken, eggs, etc from the grocery store instead of buying Atkins supplements. Also just read the books and a couple of others (zone, south beach, etc) at the bookstore, so the company never made a dime off me although I did benefit a lot from the diet.

Here's the dealio. I'm gonna eat whatever the fuck I want. I'm also not going to get fat. If that means I have to burn extra carbs, then so be it. Anyone that has to take the yellow out of their eggs before they'll eat it is off in the head IMO.

I say the same thing to every person crying about losing weight. RUN! Do you ever see fat runners? There is a damn good reason for that.

sherie 08-01-2005 12:21 PM

Because everybody is fucking dead!! Nobody can pay for memberships anymore!

Centurion 08-01-2005 12:31 PM

People who start threads saying "Atkins diet is officially dead" should read the very article they link to!

First off, the Atkins Company is filing for bankruptcy (American Airlines and United have done the same, yet they are still flying planes! Does that make flying "officially dead"?)

Atkins will continue to operate their company simply selling fewer products.
As someone else pointed out, many other companies came along and grabbed a large share of the low carb market.

The diet is NOT all red meat and bacon..lol..but common sense low carb stay away from the high starch carbs combined with high protein.

Finally, tell all the people who have lost a great deal of weight (and kept it off) due to a low carb diet. I lost 60 pounds 2 years ago, and KEPT IT OFF.

All very true, cutting out the carbs just speeds up the process, which is why it appeals to impatient people. I only need it for 2 months and now eat pretty regularily...

sorry to break the news to you but there is no evidence of significant health risks for high protein/high fat/low carb diets.

funny that millions of people can be doing it and seeing tremendous results and there are no scandals about people dropping dead.

a hugely charismatic guy built a business on a trend he began - a trend that began to see a lot of competition right before his death. its no suprise that the business would suffer as a result of both of those factors.

Sarah_Jayne 08-01-2005 01:13 PM

I am suppose to be watching the GI stuff but I need to do a better job of it. It isn't atkins but from what I can tell it takes some strokes from it. I still don't understand why new potatoes are better for you than normal potoates but if it says so then I will follow...everyone here is on the GI diet so that puts me off following the Glycemic Index a bit but my doctor says it is a good thing.

I view the whole Atkins diet like this. Being obese is about the worst possible thing for your body. The Atkins diet will allow you to loose that weight and thus increase your overall health. Exercise and diet on the other hand will improve your health even more. They both get you out of the danger zone of being obese, it is just that one gets you a bit healthier than the other. Maybe I should try the 7 deadly sins diet and just cut out a few pounds.

WWC-DonMike 08-01-2005 01:24 PM

The problem with the Atkins diet is not the diet at all, it's the people who do it half-assed. My sister was all bragging to everyone about how she was on this diet and was gonna lose all this weight (she's a fad-o-holic who jumps on every bandwagon she can). So she bought the books and all the pre-packaged stuff, would eat a pound of bacon and a bag of pork rinds in one sitting and wonder why the diet wasn't working.

She ended up scrapping that, eating better meals and working out and lost a whole bunch of weight and looks fabulous now.

Also, the diet itself works well if you follow it, but buying all that pre-packaged crap is also the downfall of it. The point is to eat real food and cut out the carbs and sugar. But the bars and meals all have so many chemicals in there that you keep eating more than you should. It's a trick of the diet companies. They help you lose weight but keep you on the verge of not being able to lose it all so that you will keep buying their crap.

Hahaha that was hilarious :thumbsup

You don't have to cut carbs out completely or get fanatic about high protein stuff to lose weight. I have put on quite a bit of weight in the past year (it was a good thing really, but now I'm not digging it as much).

Anyways, just by cutting back on a few things here and there I was able to lose about a half a pound a day. Just replace doritos with rice cakes, eat your chicken before your pasta so you don't eat as much, coffee instead of mochas with extra chocolate and whipped cream. I didn't even exercise and it helped alot.

Ugh. What horrible reasoning. The truth: Kmart went bankrupt. It was purchased out of bankrupcy by some billionaire. That billionaire also was one of the larger shareholders of Sears. He decided to merge the two.

tungsten 08-01-2005 01:55 PM

how does the atkins company being bankrupt have anything to do with the diet itself, it doesnt mean the diet doesnt work, it just means people dont want to spend ridiculous amounts of money on the garbage they sell

Are you sure your sister can read? Atkins isn't about bacon and butter. It's about eating less carbs. NOT 0 CARBS. Atkins diet includes vegetables. You have to eat vegetables. That's where you get your carbs from.

You can eat fish, chicken, sea food.. etc.. Amazing how clueless people still believe that Atkins = Bacon and eggs only.
