Your thoughts on Nihilism, apathy.. Indifference.

Deep down I've always wondered, "Why?". Why are we here, what purpose do we have, if any? Here we are in the middle of nowhere, literally, with what could be billions of miles, trillions, or possibly even infinite distance in all directions. That alone has always made me feel somewhat skeptical about our place in the universe. Our planet, our very existence is, to quote a nihilistic character in a movie, a blink of an eye. Nothing mankind ever does will change anything, for better or for worse. We'll never have any effect on our surrounding galaxy or universe(s). So many people feel we're here as the result of a mythical higher power. Someone who claims to be the son of satan, is not much different than your neighbor who has dedicated their life to this almighty power figure. Everywhere I look I see people being controlled, people wasting what is already a short, feeble life. Cosmic perposelessness, my friends. It defines our lives, our planet, and everything we have done, or ever will do.

You're a millionaire? Awsome, you can have fun and enjoy life for what it is, nothing more than a stroke of luck. Think about it. Of the millions of sperm that entered your mothers nether regions, you were the strongest swimmer. You made it to the egg first. And what was your reward? A good 70 or 80 years of struggling to make ends meet, trying to make decent money, have fun, and avoid stress. Life is not a gift, more rather, it's a pointless hardship. This is supported by the climbing suicide rates all over the world. We're giving this "gift" of life, only to suffer from depression, anxiety, violence, war, religeon, fear, hate, and love. The only redeeming value of life is love. Generally, Nihilists believe love must be stopped, however, love in its fullest is what makes life worth living. Without love, this planet, and our society would be a cold, dead, hate filled wasteland (even more so than it already is).

This brings me to indifference. Humans are indifferent to one-another. Only those close to us mean anything to us. We're selfish, ignorant, and destructive. People didn't care about the Rwandan genocide, because it didn't effect them. They didn't care that an estimated 800,000 Rwandans were killed in a span of roughly 100 days. And to be honest, I didn't care either, and still don't. It had no effect on my life, or the the quality of my living. As people were being butchered to death, I was playing super nintendo and going swimming at the public swimming pool with my friends. When the World Trade Center was destroyed back in 2001, it had no effect on my life, or the lives of my family and friends. In fact, I was more happy for my brother that day, who was turning 13. While families mourned the loss of their loved ones, and hundreds of firefighters were feared dead, my brother and I had a day of great enjoyment.

In my not-so-humble opinion, nothing that ever happens on this planet has a purpose. There is no reason for us to be here, and no reason for us to do what we do to one-another. There is no right or wrong, there is only cause and effect. People who claim to be in the right are wrong. People who claim to be wrong, are wrong. The key to enjoying life as much as one can, is to practice indifference towards your fellow man. Which is easy if they're 6000 miles away in impoverished Africa. See someone get run over by a car and killed? Starting to feel sad and depressed about it? Shake it off, you didn't know them, and wouldn't have cared if it had happened two blocks away where you wouldn't have been able to see it. Avoid unhappyness by being indifferent to mans suffering. Instead of mourning when a loved one dies, think of the good times they had in their otherwise short life. When you feel like you want to cry about it, simply feel that their death meant nothing, nor did their life. It's a harsh, skeptical way of looking at the situation, but it's the easiest way to avoid feeling down.

So is anyone going to flame me, or what?

I'm gonna have to go with indifference on this one.

you raised some interesting points there. life indeed has a purpose and that is for us to define.

Not really.

I take my wisdom from Pauly on the sopranos:

"I was born. I grewed up. Spent a few years in the army. Spent a few years in the can. Now I'm here. Half a wise guy."

Does it matter what I think? No. The world will keep revolving and rotating, independent of my petty take on the reality around me. God is dead.
