PREMIERE PRO QUESTION: When Using An AVI File from a DVD Disc....

I burn my mini dv's to dvd disc as full length avi's - I have had no problem opening a project in Pro, putting the disc in a drive, and letting the program access the file from there, until now....The program keeps freezing up when I export small 2min clips as avi's, (file, export, movie,...) - I've defraged all of the hard drives, did disc clean-up, and freed up plenty of space. The computer does not and has not ever been online. It has more than enough memory and speed, any ideas??? :helpme

Read write defency.

Whats your cache/?

Ya upgrade your system lately?

ProjectNaked 07-30-2005 03:23 PM

no upgrades, different computer. Worked fine for the first 10 or so videos I did then went to shit - defragmented twice during those 10 and deleted the exported avi files after I was done with them. Something else that gets "clogged" up with temporary files. (I also deleted all of the conformed audio and auto save files).

Why do you "burn the mini-DVs to DVD disc as full length AVIs" (Not sure sure what you mean by this terminlogy) rather than simply transfer the tapes to a hard drive as uncompressed DV AVI? A typical DVD-R can only hold 4.38 Gb which can only contain about 20 minutes or so of DV AVI video. It is foolish to try to let the program access the files from a DVD rather than a local hard drive. The files might not be valid DV AVI files or maybe your computer is choking on reading the video files off of the DVD drive rather than a local hard drive.

I was waiting for this :winkwink: - I keep a DVD disc, (sometimes 6-8 disc / 20min per disc / 60min a tape) of every event for quick access. Since I have 150+ tapes I'm using right now it's a lot of hard drive space, appx: 1500-2000 GB of space. Plus it's easy to grab a few disc and take them with me rather than carry external drives.

plus having to recapture from dv takes realtime. while loading up your dvds takes 2-4x realtime. depending on your hds speed.
