boner 2.0 07-27-2005 05:25 PM

A shitload? :upsidedow

tranza 07-27-2005 05:26 PM

I don't think they do 20Mbps, but I could be wrong.

tranza 07-27-2005 05:26 PM

I'd love to see their BW bill anyway...

:)

vBulletin takes up so much fucking resorces, its not even funny. Try to run a Vb forum, you will know why.

Does he??

Yeah I know gfy must be on a dual xeon or something. Thats why the search feature is so often disabled...

Dont think it does 20Mbits thought?

And yeah lenz owns jupiter.

I bet they push every bit of 50 megabit. How they're doing it would be the amazing part what with all of the database activity and banner advertising. There are probably several clusters of servers involved. The software is a total whore on resources and the banner management so everything rotates and comes up instantly for all the page views must be very intense.

No way they're hitting 50 mbits. This is purely text, and I wouldn't be surprized if it was 1 mbit or less.

sicone 07-27-2005 06:17 PM

GFY uses in the range of 3 to 6 mbits

GFY is mostly text, graphics in sigs or posts are hotlinked by the poster and not served by GFY, so there isnt as much to load as you're thinking

Yes Lensman owns Jupiter

tungsten 07-27-2005 06:19 PM

they definitely have the load balanced among like 3 servers.. i doubt its 1 server

Pete-KT 07-27-2005 06:22 PM

Vbulliten uses the least amount of BW compared to all the other forums, I run a VB forum site and barely uses BW

Brad Mitchell 07-27-2005 07:23 PM

They're serving all of the advertisements, fellas.

TheDoc 07-27-2005 07:26 PM

The problems GFY has, it isn't on a cluster, it's a single machine with a bucket of ram and a couple of processors. VB uses resources not BW, so I'm pretty sure the BW is under 20mbps, probably more around 8 or 10, or less..

That isn't much graphics.. Not like GFY gets more traffic than my tours and my tours have a hell of a lot more graphics than GFY hosts.. GFY doesn't push 75k+ uniques daily + my tour graphic load, which comes out to about 20mbps..

Brad Mitchell 07-27-2005 07:30 PM

I don't know their numbers. I'd be fascinated if Lens would let one of his Jupiter guys tell us about the setup. I still think everyone is underestimating it although I do agree I was high on the bandwidth estimate.
