Bad report on porn on NBC nightly news

The promo said porn companies are targetting kids. This won't be good.

After Shock Media 07-27-2005 03:43 PM

And where is our organization that a lot of us "donate" to offering the rebuttal or adult industries side?
Let me guess the phone was busy yet again and could not be reached for comment.

uno 07-27-2005 03:43 PM

Yah, it looks pretty horrible. Why would pornographers want to attract kids? At the very least kids don't have cc's and won't pay for porn, aside from all the other implications. It just doesn't make sense.

"Report shows top porn consumers between the ages of 12-17"

Bullshit

ProjectNaked 07-27-2005 04:11 PM

It is and should be the responsibility of the parents to monitor/supervise what their children do while online. I wouldn't expect a parent to let their kid sit at the bar in Applebee's as I wouldn't expect them to let their kid "surf" the web unattended. There are only a handful of legitimate websites that kids even use: encyclopedia's, library's, hell, - give them email if they are responsible enough, but that is about it. The internet is now a business place for adults. Children should only be allowed on it with adult supervision. There should be an age verification page before you are allowed to log on. :2 cents:

(I posted this in the other thread also)

RuthB 07-27-2005 04:16 PM

I notice it's a report.. do they show where they get their statistics from? Who are they surveying to get those stats? Is the report based on real information, or is it just someone's opinion?

Rich 07-27-2005 04:17 PM

But critics say the Democrats' bill would have little effect. They note that there are an estimated 420 million porn Web pages, making enforcement of the age verification requirement impossible. And since many porn Web sites are also based overseas, they're largely beyond U.S. control.

You think?

I do agree with this to a point, but parents simply CAN'T know what their kids are doing all the time...depending on the age of course.

As for the prelogin ID, I don't agree with that. If a 14 year old tries to buy cigarettes, they'll get ID'd. But they don't ID them when they walk into 7-11.

tony286 07-27-2005 04:20 PM

THe FSC is supposed to be our voice on these things but it hard for them to defend us .When the why does your industry spam kids email questions comes up. Also the group they paid to do this report is going to slant it the way they want.

Linkster 07-27-2005 04:24 PM

The report was carried earlier on MSNBC with the CEO of Vivid debunking most of it pretty well
The report that they base this on is by a new "think tank" which is actually a political action group that some democrats have formed to try to form a viable third party - thus the name is the Third Party - its trying to swing some democrats to the middle road by labelling them "progressives" in an attempt to get rid of the liberal label that the media has put on democrats.
This bill has as much chance of making it out of committee as a bill honoring Osama B Laden - no congressman in their right mind (especially the conservatives that rule the congress right now) are going to allow porn to be made a legitimate biz entity. Its also a (if a tax were ever really passed) an excise tax - which means that the tax would be on the consumer

I'd gladly assume that role-
I don't see anyone else sticking up for our rights as an industry.

Still waiting on seeing what the FSC is going to do with all of their new money-

Oh wait- Maybe Dave Cummings can help.
They can ask him about whether porn people are targeting young kids and then show him banging an 18 yr old for her first anal.

Makes sense to me-

Who is the best person to talk on our behalf?
Who is articulate enough, witty enough, and a fast thinker on his feet?

Why do people keep bringing up the FSC in this? I want them to concentrate on the real issues like the 257 stuff where a law already exists - and needs to be fixed - this tax bill hasnt even made it to a committee yet - and will sit there forever - if the age check thing ever really made it out (it hasnt the last few times they tried) the EFF would be the group that would jump on it since they already defended us on this same issue twice before

wedouglas 07-27-2005 04:30 PM

targeting kids how? im sure as hell not trageting kids. kids are poor and have no money to spend.

since when do kids have their own CC?

any CC they have is stolen, and who wants CB"s?

stupid ass media.

High Quality 07-27-2005 05:06 PM

I love statements like this. Ha. If I could block all traffic under 18 I would in a heartbeat. IF anything, cuz kids don't have credit cards or checking accounts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CheneyRumsfeld 07-27-2005 05:26 PM

forget the sorry credit card bullshit.
kids have been the victims of auto install dialers for years.
their was a guy who went to jail for just that a few years ago, and he did use keywords to target kids. disney characters and stuff like that.
also when a tgp trades traffic they don't ask the age of the surfer they are trading.
get a clue, no political party will ever defend porn.
porn is a popular football for all politicians to kick around and show the voters what a wonderful job they are doing for the taxpayers.

It would be nice to see the industry at least attempt to self-regulate, and try to make a serious effort to block out minors. For example something like the industry leaders getting together and forcing affiliates to start rating all their sites with a rating system like the ICRA, and make it easier for parents to block us. It's not going to put an end to the problem but it's going to at least show society that some efforts are being made on our part. It's something that can be done but of course larger companies would need to step up to legitimize it as a new order among the industry.

Why? Let us put it the way the FSC does. "Its mission is to safeguard the industry from oppressive governmental regulation and to promote good business practices within the industry."
This does not say their mission is safeguard the industry from the oppressive governmental regulation that we see fit and to promote good business practices within the industry when we decide to.
I do not personally care if it is 2257 regulation or the blockage of access in some rural part of arkansas. It always effects someone, 2257 may effect many of us but also not everyone, just like nearly any other regulation can.

I am also not targeting kids, yet let us be realistic. Children age 12-17 are a huge economic factor and have one of the largest if not the largest amount of expendable income.

Again let us not be nieve. Kids have had access to their own credit cards for a few years now. Any kid can go into a local store and pick one up for a few bucks thanks to Visa kids card, and Mastercards prepaid card. These would not be stolen cards and actually would be legit. Nobody in this industry however gave out these cards nor even suggested them, yet some how we will be to blame as an industry as a whole.

Those that are targeting children are indeed sick, yet there are already laws on the books regarding misleading domain names as well as meta tags. I know it is a crazy idea but how about people enforce what is already on the books instead of just making shit up.

yys 07-27-2005 05:46 PM

The FSC did have someone comment on the 25% tax on either the nbc or the abc news broadcast. He mentioned that it would be a form of censure and would open a back door for congress too target other forms of expression in the future.

As for the argument that kids don't have credit cards I'll just say get your head out of the '80's. Pre-teens have them now and I'd bet that a majority of teens carry their own cards now; not just companion cards either. Using credit cards as a form of age verification is not very effective. They were talking about drivers licenses or passport numbers but I don't think that will ever happen due too privacy concerns.

On a positive note some sites probably had a nice spike in traffic from the free promo. CyberErotica was used twice in the one segment.

fuzebox 07-27-2005 08:54 PM

Heh. I always find these things funny... Who here did not look at porn until they were 18?

When I was 13 I had a 28.8 and searching for "pamela anderson nude" was good enough... when I turned 14 I started shoplifting hardcore magazines from whatever magazine shop had the worst security (blame the slow internet connection)... When I was 16 we had broadband, but only my parents computer was connected and I had to download movies and transfer them to my own computer via zip disk... Wasn't til I was 17 did I have high speed in my room and was able to leech all the porn my high school hormone-enraged self wanted.

Not sure how that's relevant, but I always find it funny how people freak out about high schoolers having access to porn... Of course 12-17 year olds are the biggest group of consumers, they want it and are looking for it, and there's more than enough of it available for free.

bjjb 07-27-2005 08:58 PM

WE didnt have the internet when I was a kid but my dad had a hell of a stack of Playboys, Penthouses and Hustlers in the bathroom. Kids are gonna find it no matter what kinda regulations the assholes put on it.

PixeLs 07-27-2005 09:21 PM

Are those 18 enter and under 18 exit tabs not working?lol

chazer 07-27-2005 09:24 PM

i had a suscription to hustler when i was 16 and got videos from buddies. (paid with by money order)

the first time i was exposed to it was when I was 14-15, my cousin's father had old hardcore mags from the 70's that we stole

no internet for me... but the time I found out about it I was old enough to buy porn anyways

Allison 07-27-2005 09:25 PM

I think this is just another example of how falsely represented our industry is.

- legit adult companies don't target kids, it's not a worthwhile/ethical business decision at all (but yes, I'm sure there are plenty of kids under 18 who's parent's don't parent them at all & they go and find whatever they want to find online)

- If the government actually tried to work with legit adult companies they'd probably be able to come up with 100 better and more effective ideas then all these crazy regulations they've recently proposed (from 2257 to this 25% tax).

First of all there are tons of "pokemon porn" and "disney porn" type things on the net.

Second, who do you think is targetting kids? It sure as hell isn't the paysites or webmasters pushing paysites. It's the TGP's selling ads to people promoting paysites. They don't give a shit who is on their site so long as their counter at the end of the day justifies the prices they charge on ads.

I'm not talking about all TGP's btw as I'm sure many really give a damn who comes to their site. However, many of the owners don't give 2 shits about anything but the dollars at the end of the day.
