It's official: Americans can no longer take prescription birth control for granted.

It's official: Americans can no longer take prescription birth control for granted. Yesterday, Monday, July 25, anti-choice representatives in the U.S. House made it clear that they support pharmacies that refuse to fill birth-control prescriptions - and that women have no right to birth control.

The radical right's campaign to stop birth control
The House Small Business Committee held a hearing on whether pharmacies should be allowed to refuse to fill women's prescriptions. Anti-choice Rep. Steve King (R-IA) told a witness, who had been denied birth control and emergency contraception by her pharmacist, that she had no "right" to her prescriptions - she only believed she did. Anti-choice Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO) told a witness whose prescription had also been rejected by a hostile pharmacist, that her "minor inconvenience" - that is, risking an unintended pregnancy - was nothing compared to the "conscience" of a pharmacist.

The right's anti-birth control campaign doesn't stop in Washington, DC. Across the country, the radical right has engaged pharmacies in its campaign to block women's access to birth control. Women like Julee Lacey, a 32-year-old married mother of two and first-grade teacher from Texas, are being turned away by vigilante pharmacists who think it's their job to dispense morals instead of medicine.

Now, as many as 20 states officially protect pharmacists like Karen Brauer, president of Pharmacists for Life, who says she'd lecture women customers to get off the pill. Other states are pursuing an even more aggressive strategy. Just last month Wisconsin passed a bill to block state universities from filling birth control prescriptions.

You think it's bad now, just watch if they take BC from them. And you know, of course there are assholes who abuse the system, but there are also families who work hard and still can't make ends meet.

nearly everyone on welfare is abusing it and on welfare because they are irresponsible. they didnt use BC and found themselves with a child by accident. if you cant afford to save a portion of your income for a rainy day you shouldnt have children. if you dont have children, you dont get welfare. people are irresponsible and being rewarded for it. IF YOU CANT AFFORD TO LIVE AND SUPPORT CHILDREN, YOU SHOULDNT HAVE THEM and i dont feel sorry for you if you arent making ends meet. of course there are a few instances where this doesnt apply such as injury where an income is cut or eliminated but for the most part the people in the system are people who have no business having children.

To a point, I agree. But I got pregnant at 16 from a non-consentual situation...I hesitate to say rape only because I don't want it to ever hit my son's ears that he was a product of rape. Had it not been for welfare, I would not have been able to graduate high school with my class, and go on to college. I worked, went to high school, and then college, and raised my son, and had no more children for seven years, until I was married.

Things happen...

I know one girl who's fiance got sent to prison....they went from living comfortably on two incomes, to her struggling to support their kids, because he can't pay support from prison. It wasn't HER fault he broke the law...and she DID have money put away, but it didn't last five years.

My son's father was killed in a car accident..his current wife and their three kids were in the car. Their daughter was in traction for a while, and still needs physical therapy, nearly three years later. She was a stay at home mom before. She had to care for a temporarily disabled daughter, but even without that, her kids were emotionally scarred from watching their dad get killed a foot away from them, and they were not ready to be apart from the one parent they had left for a few months. Welfare got them over the hump. Now she works.

There are people who genuinely need the help, and don't abuse it. They accept temporary assistance and get back up on their own two feet, and pay the same taxes you do. Without the help I got..I may not have ever been able to graduate high school..certainly not with my class..because instead of working part time, I would have had to work full time..and then some to cover child care. And then I would REALLY be a drain on the system, because without an education, I probably wouldn't be able to support my three kids now that I am a single mom again, and my ex doesn't seem to think he needs to support the two he helped bring into this world.

Not every person abuses the help they are given. But I guess we are both right, because a lot do.

theres always exceptions but the sad reality is most, ie more then 50%, abuse it and/or are on it because of poor planning. another sad thing about it is had that happened to you now in california and you had a minimim wage job, even close to full time you wouldnt qualify because theres a line infront with no income and 5 mouths to feed.

Anti-choice? Does that make the other side Anti-life?

This post doesn't have anything to do with my views on aborition I just find the terms funny. I avoid political threads here almost as much as I do business threads :)

Apparently these people thing that women only take those so they can fuck all they want. Some of us actually take them for hormonal regulation. It's estrogen people. I have a medical reason to use them. It sucks to miss work becuase you are in the fetal position from paid and can't eat solid food for 3 days due to swinging hormones. But considering most of those "anti-choice" people are male, I doubt they would understand that.

FunForOne 07-26-2005 07:43 PM

I dont think you guys understand.

What they are saying is that the guy who owns the private business has the right to sell anything he wants.

The customer cant demand that he provide a product that he doesn't carry.

That would be like a surfer sueing you because you dont have enough gay porn on your site. Tell him to go somewhere else.

BS.... They are professionals providing a service to the community the same way a Dr or Hospital would.

A Dr might not like treating a particular patient because of his/her beliefs, but they still do it. Some people take a job where they just cant be judgemental.

They knew that when they started. What if it is the only pharmacist in town.... leave it so she has an unnecessary abortion?

You're a fucking idiot.

A pharmacist has a responsibility to provide all legally available drugs and medications irrespective of their personal beliefs.

If your personal beliefs prevent you from providing birth control pills then find another fucking profession other than a pharmacist.

In my view, these pharmacists should be made to pay for the upbringing of children that were conceived because they refused to supply birth control pills to a woman who requested them and was legally entitled to them.

Nysus 07-26-2005 07:58 PM

Can I see a stat on some government website for that please? There's no way of measuring. Yes, you hear and know of people abusing it, but to say 50% or more isn't really fair. Even 10-20% abusing it isn't good; it doesn't matter if it's higher than that. If it is at 50% abuse, it's because a large portion can't get jobs or can't get funding for education, and some yes are lazy.

Can still get someone pregnant from pre-cum...

Honestly, theoretically speaking, the 'best way' which shouldn't be done because it's the wrong way, is if you want an issue looked at differently, or looked at, is to affect the politicians who make decisions, eg: knock up all their daughters and wives for the abortion issue, give them different diseases, out and blackmail the gay/bi-sexual/homosexual tendancy politicians ... etc. or even simple things like seeing how many of the politician's daughters use birth control, or hell, are having pre-marital sex... and stick it to them that this is the world as it is, and not when they grew up.

Biggest problem with politicians is they're old.

All Hail Bush he was the best thing that happened to this country, and if you believe that i have a bridge to sell you. This country is going to shit and it is a matter of time before we are not the dominate power anymore. Bush will go down in the history books as the President who brought America Down, you mark my words it will happen. They always said the Devil would walk the earth again, and now we know he is in Washington.

You're just a whiney liberal who won't suck it up to do the right thing, just like those AIDS and cancer patients who think they have the right to anything that works for them. The country admires a glaucoma patient who goes blind to remain legal, quit your bitchen' and let those hormones swing the way God intended them to. :winkwink:
