I use Bullet Proof and Spy subtract along with all those free ones..the free ones aren't as effective so it is worth the 20 bucks or so and buy a decent program.

Sosa 07-25-2005 08:21 PM

can't use just one program. Install/update all of these and run them one by one. Avg Free edition , Spyboyt Search & Destory , Ad-aware , Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If it only was that simple.I don't click yes to anything and my programs manage to find atleast 20 instances everyday..

Murderous 07-25-2005 08:28 PM

yeah, I didn't click anything either... was reviewing trades and ran into an asshole who submitted a nasty circlejerk, before i knew it my whole computer was fucked... got most of it, but it's still leaving bits behind.

Not at all true and AVG (which I used for years) doesn't catch everything.

I use a combination of Microsoft's free anti spyware software and Zone Alarms full security suite. Both working exceptional for some time, so far.

I keep updated and run regularly AVG, Adaware, ZoneAlarm, Spybot, and the MS anti-spyware.

I reformatted my hard drive about 3 weeks ago after exploring links from a link posted here, some auto-install shit. I never click on anything that I don't know what the extention is. Whatever it was turned off everything but ZoneAlarm, deleted all my restore points, corrupted my net connection and blocked my access to anything administrator on the PC and the only way I could get back online was to reformat and reinstall Windows

reynold 07-26-2005 05:33 AM

I've been using Ad-aware...not so sure if it is completely what my little 'puter needs. Interested in trying out some others listed here too.

Bingo, we have a winner!
Although Ad-Aware sometimes fails in removal, it's very good at detection. Once you know what the culprit is, there are 100 sites that explain in detail how to remove.

Linkster 07-26-2005 07:15 AM

More important than what you use - is how you use it - first you have to be disconnected from the net, running in safe mode and in each account on the computer (assuming a windows op sys) including the admin account.
Its useless to run these programs on one account and then think youre fine.

Between Spy Sweeper, Adaware SE plus version, hijackthis and cws shredder you should be able to get rid of anything - of course it all depends on what it is as some require some registry editing

Basic_man 07-26-2005 08:06 AM

I use Adaware all the time, it's the best you can get for free :thumbsup

Spyware remover is just bandaid. I don't get any spyware because I have 2 firwalls running. I suggest you install ZoneAlarm and buy a router.

Paco, of Large Cash. 07-27-2005 07:55 AM

Paid: Sun-Belt's Counter Spy ($20 USD)
It detects and removes the most amount of intrusions and since acquiring, I only use it (on my home system) and Avast!4Home (detects and removes viruses).

Free:
#1: Spybot, simply because of the extra tools, otherwise it is not much different from #2, below.
#2: Adaware

Linkster 07-27-2005 08:42 AM

Just for some quick info - the new version of Spysweeper that was released yesterday will add 40k worth of entries to your hosts file - including some of the common sponsors as blocked - just found it with ARS's help
