I saved a drowning Osprey yesterday. (pics)

I was relaxing on my patio overlooking the Intercoastal Waterway and I noticed a kite flutter down and fall into the water near the the other side of the river about 700 yards away.

Then the next thing I notice is what looks like a bird diving down to grab a fish like they usually do, but this bird never took back off and it was not a pelican so it caught my attention.

Turns out an Osprey got caught in the kite string (which was most likey monofilament fishing line) and it got wrapped around it's neck and I guess it passed out and fell in the water close to my dock within 100 feet of me.

So I grabbed some gloves and my fishing net and rescued it. We called the state wildlife office and they told me where to take it for rehab.

The neat part is they named the bird after me and will release it here at my house when it recovers.

An Osprey is a "Bird of Prey" like a Bald Eagle but they generally only live around large bodies of water. They build huge nests and are very neat to watch them hunt.

Anyways it made me feel good so I thought I'd share the story.

Here is the Osprey. He is a juvenille and he is wet, hurt and freaked out, so he doesent look too well. But hopefully I'll be able to get some pics after he recovers and before we release him. or her..

When I was down in Fort Lauderdale I used to volunteer at the wildlife center in Davie near the airport, it's crazy how many wild animals get in trouble because of man's carelessness :(

At one time they were, I think they are listed as threatened now (in Florida). I searched around a little bit and in some states they are still endangered.

Relish XXX 07-25-2005 07:48 PM

I once saw 2 men in a van with a shotgun drivin around my block pickin off pigeons, they killed a couple, but the third one I found had a broken wing, he was not hit, just fell I think. Anyway I took him home and we fixed his wing up, we named him superchicken, he did not fly for some months and just wabbled around the yard. He was a great pet, till he was able to fly, and left. After he left, he came back for food for a few months..... any way... one more time, Great Job

Major (Tom) 07-26-2005 06:15 AM

when an osprey graps its talons on its prey it cannot let go for some 30 seconds. sometimes, an osprey grabs on to a big fish and it cannot let go and is dragged under water and sometimes drowns. strange but tru.

Awesome.... I saw one here in the UK once, amazing bird.

They were virtually extict here for a long time. I think it is the exact type you have in the US.

mindoza 07-26-2005 06:33 AM

You are AWESOME!!! Glad there will be a happy ending!!

They are beautiful Birds. My family's Boat use to be in a marina in Chestertown Maryland. They were protected birds. They always had nest on the markers or the piling around it. They are one of the great things I miss about the Chesapeake/eastern seaboard

Paco, of Large Cash. 07-26-2005 06:44 AM

The state wildlife people just called me and said the Osprey doing well but has alot of damage to it's feathers, is a little under weight, but will be good as new in 2 - 3 weeks.
