Buying New Computer - Need Advice!

So I need to buy a new desktop since my old one is starting to get a bit old.

I would like some system suggestions. I am going to use the computer for video editing so it needs to be pretty powerful machine power :)

Also where do you guys get ahold of all those Dell coupons or rebate tickets or whatever it's called? I wanna get me that Dell 20inch widescreen screen :P

Why AMD? Which AMD processor would you recommend?

GoNe 07-25-2005 07:44 PM

well it depends how much performance you need. I personally just think AMD is better. I have a 3000+ and it is plenty fast. you may wanna get a 900 series chip though. since pci express is the future of graphic cards, youll want a mobo that has pci express. and there arent many pther boards with pci exprss that use the 700 series chip. i forget the actually numbers. 939 and 754 or something like that. just dont get sempron. get amd 64 or FX

wedouglas 07-25-2005 07:51 PM

just read what www.arstechnica .com has in their guides. it is a very reputable and intelligent site. good recommendations.

the new dual core amd64's are benching really well, i'd check them out with a nice 939 nforce4 board.

I just had this machine delivered about a week ago. http://www1.us.dell.com/content/prod...n&s=dhs&~ck=mn

It has the dual core 3.0 cpu with 1 gig of 533mhz ram installed, so far so good. One thing though, those bastards just dropped the price a couple hundred and they wont give me a price adjustment. :Oh crap

Anyways, regarding the monitor. I only upgraded to the 17" ultrasharp lcd because I already have a 19" from a different manufacturer. Anyways, to make a long story short. I just ordered this LCD and awaiting its arrival, pretty inexpensive.

make sure you figure out if you need dual core. they have their advanages and disadvantages. single core are still better for things.

DateDoc 07-25-2005 08:07 PM

Make sure it has a 64-bit processor. MS Vista is made to run on a 64-bit machine and will be out soon (it will run on a 32-bit but not as efficiently).

GoNe 07-25-2005 08:41 PM

Ouch Dual Core looks really expensive at the moment is it worth it? I am mainly going to use this computer for Video Editing.

Also anyone know how the windows xp 64bit version is? been looking at Athlon64 3500+ Venice.. Good?

webcrawler 07-25-2005 08:56 PM

check out newegg.com

For you pro video editing guys what kind of systems do you have? What kind of systemes do you want?

reynold 07-26-2005 05:30 AM

try to use an ASUS motherboard.

GoNe 07-26-2005 07:12 AM

What do you guys think of this system?

- Motherboard
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra 4DDR-DIMM 4PCI 3PCIe SATA-II Raid Audio USB 2.0 2xGB-LAN Firewire Socket939 ATX

- Processor
AMD Athlon64 "Venice" 90nm 3500+ 2200MHz/2.2GHz 512kb Boxed (with cpu-cooler!) Socket939

- Harddrive
Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 74Gb 10000rpm 8Mb cache S-ATA

- Memory
Corsair VS1GB400C3 Value Select 2x1024Mb (tot. 2048Mb/2Gb) DDR PC3200 400MHz 184pin CL3

- Graphics
Gainward GeForce 6600GT 256Mb DDR3 TV-out DVI RETAIL PCI Express

- DVD
Plextor PX-716A DVD +RW/R -RW/R 16X DVD+R 4X DVD+RW 8X DVD-R 4X DVD-RW 48X CDR 24X CDRW bulk IDE

- Case
Chieftec LCX-01B-B-SL Super MidiTower black/silver 400W ATX

Then I'll also put in some harddrives that I got at home.

Rui 07-26-2005 07:16 AM

Gone - Stay away from that mobo, had one and nothing but problems, go with a Asus AN8-E...

As for the rest you don't really need a overrated gfx card like that a Albatron/MSI/Sparkle 6600GT will do the same and cost way less.

As for the rest looks like a nice setup (tho too little space, I would get 2 Hitachi 160GB SATA II drives instead ;) )

Evil Doer 07-26-2005 07:21 AM

"- Harddrive
Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 74Gb 10000rpm 8Mb cache S-ATA"

When I ordered those for my machine... It took 6 drives mailing them back and fourth to Western Digital to find two good ones. I've heard similar horror stories as mine, just letting you know.

Ouch! I heard the same thing from another guy. I think I am going to get this hdd then already got one so will have 2 of these babies in my comp.

Seagate Barracuda ST3200826AS 7200.8 200Gb 7200rpm 8Mb cache NCQ S-ATA

Rui I changed the motherboard to this one
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe nForce4 SLI 4DDR-DIMM 3PCI 4PCIe SATA Raid Audio GB-LAN Firewire Socket939 ATX

What you guys think now? :D

Rui 07-26-2005 07:37 AM

GoNe - don't got with that...iether get the AN8-E (nforce4 ultra) or the A8N-SLI PREMIUM (if you want SLI) since this are the latest ones launched that fixed some problems with the first boards like the A8N-SLI (beeing one them beeing able to run in 1T)

Cheers

Basic_man 07-26-2005 08:26 AM

Get a ASUS motherboard, with a Pentium 4 3.0Ghz HT processor

Evil Doer 07-27-2005 04:07 AM

The Seagates are a good choice

Theo 07-27-2005 04:10 AM

you OS should support 64bit processing

Pretty_Lara 07-27-2005 04:18 AM

apple the best choice
