Anyone ever replace a power supply on their pc?

I am going to give that a shot today on one of my machines that got fried last week. This machine is a fucking horse. Ive used it for broadcasting so I kinda want it back... Worth a shot I guess considering I have a few other pcs laying around here anyways...

ummm... its just a screw in/ plug in job. takes about 5 minutes

Ice 07-25-2005 11:55 AM

yup I have done it.... pretty easy

the Shemp 07-25-2005 11:55 AM

4 screws....

Steve 07-25-2005 11:56 AM

yeah, it should be very simple swap - if you want to get really anal about it, tage each connection off the old power supply before you start disconnecting everything, so you know for sure that you dont miss anything.

Penthouse Tony 07-25-2005 11:56 AM

Yeah it's pretty easy to do. Just make sure you are grounded.

thanks guys!!!!!!! I appreciate it!

Very easy:
- unplug power cord
- unplug connectors from their homes (drives & etc)
- remove four screws
- pull from case
Now throw the puppy in reverse (go through the steps backwards).

Even a person with no head can do this!

Trixxxia 07-25-2005 11:59 AM

Yup - I was able to do it too :) It's gotta be simple!

wedouglas 07-25-2005 12:03 PM

its may be a tight squeeze if its not a custom PC, which i doubt it is. most companys, like dell or hp etc, have tight cases that will require the removal of stuff in order to be able to pul it out and put it back in. in that case you may be needing to unscrew your mobo etc. the biggest problem, if you have one, will be having enough space to get it out and out it back in.

Thanks for the tips guys! I already got the old one out... Im just going to run to my friends place and match up a replacement.... :)

Sosa 07-25-2005 12:27 PM

simple to do.. remove 4 screws and then just plug power cables back in.

Ycaza 07-25-2005 02:45 PM

its really easy as all have said make sure the PS you got conforms to the power supply needs of the processor, extra fans in it never hurt. Newer processors take a more powerful PS. older 1 ghz processors could take as low as a 250 watt, but newer ones you are lookin at 450 watts and above, then simply unscrew unplug and then screw and plug. talk to your hardware vendor about power ratings, it will help.

koreanbbque 07-25-2005 02:59 PM

don't underpower your PC. get at least 450 watt powersupply for most PCs today.

I got that Ultra X-Connect 500 watt supply. Those cables are awesome. Haven't had any problems.

Doc911 07-25-2005 03:18 PM

make sure you unplug the power cord first.

GweedZilla 07-25-2005 03:38 PM

What drives me nuts is plugging all my drives/cards/board connections back in :/
