I brushed death like 10 min ago

Has anyone been totally alone and choked on something? Scared the living shit outta me. I was muching on some cheddar cheese rice cakes and sucked one down the wrong hole somehow. It was totally lodged and I couldn't cough or anything. The worst part was I somehow did this after I exhaled so I had even less time.

I literally just punched myself in my upper stomach a few times and got to the point where I could gasp and cough for a while till I got back in control.

SCARY!!!!! :helpme

I had a similiar experience a couple years ago, was totally losing it. Wasn't sure if I should run out into the street to get help or what. I finally jumped on the armrest of the couch directly on my stomach. Knocked the wind out of me but I was able to cough up the food. Was sweating, shaking and half in shock.

That is precisely what I was going to tell you

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 07-23-2005 11:33 PM

Guess you missed the warning label: "Do NOT eat cheddar cheese rice cakes while alone".

...and now as a public service:

http://www.heimlichinstitute.org/media/heimlichself.jpg

The Heimlich Maneuver for CHOKING

When you choke, you can't speak or breathe and you need help immediately. Follow these steps to save yourself from choking:

1. Make a fist and place the thumb side of your fist against your upper abdomen, below the ribcage and above the navel.
2. Grasp your fist with your other hand and press into your upper abdomen with a quick upward thrust.
3. Repeat until object is expelled.

Alternatively, you can lean over a fixed horizontal object (table edge, chair, railing) and press your upper abdomen against the edge to produce a quick upward thrust. Repeat until object is expelled.

See a physician immediately after rescue.

*****

I'm glad to hear that you didn't panic and managed to save yourself. Lots of people die every year in such bizarre incidents.

I did that once to. I was smart enough to wakeup with a DRY MOUTH and hungry, so I ate a MUFFIN, without anything to drink, it got lodged in my throat and i swallowed as hard as I could and barely made it ... horrible :(

Thanks for posting that... GFY saves lives!

bdjuf no I will not be in Florida but I will be in Amsterdam :)

Yeah this scared this shit outta me cuz I'm pretty much alone. My kids are sound asleep. They would have woken up to a dead mother on the floor. Nice eh?

I heard a story a long time ago about a new bride. Just got married and they were at the reception... did the whole cake thing and she started to choke a little and quickly excused herself. She discreetly bolted off into a back room of the church and DIED!!! Talk about horrific... eesh

We all like to joke around, but actually posting such info, even in GFY just could save a life. I was a Boy Scout when I was a kid, received additional first aid and emergency training in the military and I also did volunteer work for the Red Cross for many years - the training has proven to be invaluable so many times.

I have helped people many times in emergencies. For example, I always carry a fire extinguisher in my car, and three times I have used one to put out another person's engine fire.

When I was a manager during my corporate years, I made it a point to have quarterly safety meetings, to make sure everyone knew what to do in the case of fire or an earthquake, and everyone was trained in CPR. Hopefully you never have to use such training, but it is invaluable should an emergency situation arise.

I have no idea why they don't teach more of this in the schools. Probably the same reason they don't teach kids other basic survival techniques such as how to balance a check book and manage money.

Life is so fragile. Good to hear you are okay.

The information posted is very important. You never know when you may find yourself in a choking situation. I panic. That only makes matters worse.

I'm sure if you were choking to death you could give Gonzo a call and he'd come help you out. :2 cents:

Nightwind 07-24-2005 12:19 AM

I pulled a "Bush" about a year ago and almost choked on a pretzel after accidently inhaling too hard while it was in my mouth.

Spankyspicpost 07-24-2005 12:19 AM

Totally uncalled for remark, War Baby, but as bitter as our relationship is, I would help Gonzo and he would help me in a life and death situation.

I had a car accident about 2 years ago, life flashed before my eyes. I have had a very hard time driving that road ever since.

I was watching a funny movie once and I had just put a bunch of popcorn in my mouth when something funny happened in the movie. So I gasped for air and in the process of that the popcorn got sucked down my throat.

I could barely breathe in. Luckily I was able to inhale enough air to let out one big cough and it all came flying out.

bhutocracy 07-24-2005 01:59 AM

this happened to my gf earlier this year while she was out with her sister.. she laughed while taking a swig of water and would have died if her sister didn't get her bent over. She was about to pass out.. scary shit

weaverguy 07-24-2005 02:29 AM

Sarah_Jayne 07-24-2005 02:48 AM

Glad you are okay even if a headline about a lethal rice cake would be slightly amussing.
