Hosting company keeps harassing me. What do I do?

Many many years ago when I first started out. I got a domain name, and cheap hosting. Now, years later after I've left them and got a dedicated server at swiftco.net, and those people are calling me telling me I owe them for hosting that I've never used.

They say my account is still active. I cancelled and did everything they asked me to do. And still they are calling. It's cheap to, lik $36.00 but still.. I shouldn't have to pay for hosting I never used.

Has anyone ever had to go through this? What do I do?

munki 07-22-2005 02:01 PM

Nicely explain to them that they should go fuck themselves...

psili 07-22-2005 02:02 PM

Can you ask them for a bandwidth report ? If you didn't use any bandwidth and cancelled right after joining, I can't see how they can charge you - unless the $36.00 is for some setup charge that was to be paid up front. *shrug*

thaifan99 07-22-2005 02:04 PM

Explain politely how much you could cost them on all the WM boards if they insist on bugging you.

Good idea I should ask them for the reports. The money is definitely NOT a set up fee. They claim it's because I still have an active account, when I know for a fact I do NOT.

RedShoe,

Your time is worth more than $36 I would presume. Just pay it and move on. Not saying this b/c I work for a hosting company, but seems like a waste of time.

It's not the money it's the principal. This is no the first time that company has done this to me. Last time, I thought we took care of it.

So then you're saying I should just pay ever person that sends me a $36.00 bill?
Can I get your address? Maybe I could get you to just fork over some $$.

"...seems like a waste of time" HELLO!!! You're on GFY!!! What do you think we do here? Get time back?

sandman! 07-22-2005 03:46 PM

tell them to gfy themselves a hosting company once lost me cancel email and tried billing me for 6 months even tho i had 0 files uploaded and 0 bandwith used.

If it's the principal then I can understand that. Do you really get that many mysterious bills showing up? I don't. All I was purely stating was that it seems like your time is more valuable then having to go through reports. By the time you got done w/ that, you probably could've made more than $36.

That being said, I can totally understand the principal part though.

Just my 2 cents and no I will not pay your bill...LOL

As far as GFY goes, I can't spend too much time here or I woudn't get any work done amigo.

Unless they are outsourcing, its costing them a lot more than $36. Just ignore them. They probably want you to open a new account.

Poppy 07-22-2005 04:20 PM

Not sure if you care about your credit report, but I know I would be pissed if a $36 ding was showing up and was preventing me from getting a loan or something. Not sure if a $36 ding would, but was just thinking about that.

Relish XXX 07-22-2005 04:24 PM

If they put it on your credit report and it is untrue you can take them to court and get a nice payout.

Personally I would send them one email saying that they should take you to court. They wont bother over $36.

Minte 07-22-2005 04:24 PM

Send them a $2,000 invoice for your consulting time. When they don't pay up put a collection agency on them.

corvette 07-22-2005 04:28 PM

forward them a copy of your cancelation (email, i am assuming)

should be the end of it

That's exactly what they said. This was like 3 years ago.. at least. I had them switched companies and thought that was it. Then they hit me up and I explained to them I was no longer with them and they made me do a cancellation form which I did and sent back and now they want more $$.

I don't have a copy of it anymore. It was a long ass time ago. It was something that once I was done doing, I never thought in a million years I'd need to EVER hear from them again.

And yes the last thing the lady said was, "this is just a courtesy call before we send it over to collections"

sonofsam 07-22-2005 04:35 PM

dude, just tell them how many posts you have on gfy.. lol

but seriously, tell them if they keep harassing you, you'll ask on the major webhosting forums if you guys have a history of harassing customers for debts that are non existant

Shaolin Pixel 07-22-2005 06:18 PM

For $36?

baddog 07-22-2005 06:25 PM

it is a company that anyone knows?

Code_Havoc 07-22-2005 06:50 PM

I had something similiar happen with a Dedicated Server place, was running me like $120/month for a cheap server. I'd paypal my payments and had to remind them every month to NOT shut off my server (even though they had my money) so I said screw it and cancelled, and after all the cancel forms were done and everything, they send me a bill like 6 months later saying I'm over due on my payment. To make a long story short, they tried saying I never cancelled, and even uploaded stuff on their own so bandwidth reports showed bandwidth usage and claimed lawyers would get involved if I didn't send them the $120, so I called their bluff and told'em to go for it. Next day I got a call apologizing for the 'mistake'.

Daddog, it's a small little cheap LA based hosting company. In fact they are right down the street from me on Ventura blvd. Maybe I should just go in and confront them on it.

I'm guessing this guy is just thinking I'm the kind of person Poppy is and just pay it 'cause it's not worth my time. And it certainly isn't worth my time, I mean it's just a few bucks really. But if they sent me a bill for just 1 buck I'd fight to the death not to pay it. ... TO THE DEATH!

LOL, maybe not to the death :upsidedow but I definitely agree with you. There are too many swindlers out there these days to let them get away with it by paying them off as nuisances. Might be a nice side income, asking for new money from all your old customers :winkwink:

webair 07-25-2005 01:45 PM
