Are you good at promoting niches you don't like? MYTH?

It is common industry advice that you should promote niches you actually like. Like "big tits"? Build big tits sites. Is this a myth or is there something to it? My experience. I don't think it matters. I used to make a lot of money from gay sites but those guys tits aren't big enough for me.

I assume it just makes the promoting part more pleasing, it might not have anything to do with the actual revenue generated by the niche.

Making money is a good enough time for me. ;-)

If you're a straight guy promoting gay it might even be a turn on for the surfers.

Tranny's have always been one of my best niches. It may be more pleasing to make say, a teen or lesbian gallery, but you have to stick with what sells the best :)

I once ran a gay site that averaged over 100k visitors/day. Don't know if they were turned off but they were buying from my sponsors.

Have to agree with you there. I know some guys that did real well with tranny's. As far as I know, neither of them are.

There is a lot of advice given in this business which was either wrong in the first place or out-of-date by the time it went public.

I would guess that whoever originally offered this wisdom assumed that if you like a niche, you will also understand it. However, that isn't necessarily true, nor is it necessary to like a market in order to understand it.

But I don't think it is bad advice, particularly on the 'net where even the most off-the-wall tastes are likely to find enough takers. Certainly when you are starting out, it is easier to cater for tastes similar to your own.

I think it's real. You might think about things that will attract people loving the same thing as you like..

Barefootsies 07-22-2005 07:12 AM

I'd say the advice is spot on for someone new to the industry. If you are new, or trying to break through, or even going from tgp/ll/or some other variant and looking to take the next step to a paysite, the advice is good. Stick to what you know.

But.. if you have been in thr industry for sometime, then you probably have picked up enough knowledge of what sells, marketing, promotion, and different interests that you can sell anything. I would personally think that the tip comes from keeping your interest more. I know for me, I would not approach a tranny, gay, midget, ass, tit site with the same enthusiasm as a foot fetish site. So for me, keeping in my interest makes my work more enjoyable.

I agree that it is good advice for someone new to the industry - but with a small caveat - it "helps" to like the niche or even enjoy the type of sex, but that wont sell - it just helps in understanding the feelings certain words invoke in you and hopefully therefore in your surfers. The caveat is that you better also be recommending that they learn how to sell - it doesnt matter how good a site looks, how perfect the html, and how expensive and clear the content is - if you cant write a good sales pitch you better hang it up.
