Chicago Police Put Arrest Photos of Prostitution Suspects Online

The Chicago Police Department began posting on its Web site on Tuesday photographs, names and partial addresses of people who were arrested on charges of soliciting prostitutes in a move intended to embarrass offenders and deter people from committing such crimes.

"If we can do anything to get a john to think twice about coming into Chicago communities to solicit a prostitute, we think we're addressing the problem," said Dave Bayless, a Police Department spokesman.

By Wednesday night, photos of dozens of men who had been arrested in the last month were posted. The photos will be updated daily and posted for 30 days.

In a statement, Mayor Richard M. Daley said, "It's a terrible life, and a caring society has a responsibility to help these women turn their lives around and to keep other young women from entering the profession."

Mr. Bayless said he was not concerned about posting photos of people who had been arrested but not convicted of crimes.

"Every day in this office we send out mug shots of individuals charged with crimes, and newspapers publish those photos," he said.

A spokesman for the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois said it had not taken a position on the issue and had no comment.

But Patti Buffington, the executive director of Genesis House, a social service agency that provides shelter and outreach to prostitutes, said she worries that the postings could have repercussions for some people at home...

That's some bull shit. I have a real problem with shit like that. There is no need for it. The guy just wanted to get his duck sucked... big freakin' deal. So now they post where they live and show their pics. What a shame.

When a Deja Vu strip club opened near my house years back, a group of local Christian asswipes were on the sidewalk 24/7 taking photos of cars as they drove into the club. By friend who is a HUGE hillbillie got his big 4x4 truck and we went up there, knowing he was going to flip on them. We kind of baited him. Sure as they started on him they had a fight on their hands and a broken camera. It was awesome.

CybermedAndy 07-21-2005 01:39 AM

That is one sorry bunch of guys, no doubt.

And I agree, that sort of thing is bullshit, no need for it. Go arrest some child molesters instead.

flashfire 07-21-2005 01:43 AM

is it working? are they arresting less people?

yeah, naming and shaming doesnt work. Funny you should mention paedophiles in this case, in the UK a few years ago, 2 innocent people were killed (one hung in a pub, one stabbed) because "the sun" (newspaper) incorrectly named them (with addresses) as paedophiles...

Are they doing it to upset the ethnic communities? 95% of the guys on there are Hispanic or Afro-Caribbean.

VeriSexy 07-21-2005 01:48 AM

yeah, seems something is wrong there. :2 cents:

VirtuMike 07-21-2005 02:46 AM

It's sexual harassment in reality. The police department has admitted that the intent of their publishing these photos and this information was to make people feel uncomfortable in their home environment. I bet a good civil liberties lawyer could win this one.

Simply (and obviously unfortunately) an accurate representation of the people the police target for most crimes :/

More likely the busts are taking place on the crime-ridden south side of Chicago. It just so happens that it's mostly a Hispanic and black population there.

Jessie Jackson was upset a few weeks ago over Chicago police pulling over more blacks than whites. Their reasoning was that they put more patrol cars in bad neighborhoods, which in Chicago anyway tend to have more blacks than whites.

Race has nothing to do with it. They are targeting high crime areas.

Hornydog4cooter 07-21-2005 03:29 AM

Shit they been doing that and airing it on public access tv for years....

xNetworx 07-21-2005 03:53 AM

Things can't be going good for those guys... and now this!

jayeff 07-21-2005 03:54 AM

A few weeks ago there was a similar report about somewhere in Calfornia posting (slightly blurred, for now) pictures around the city...

I love this kind of response, in fact any kind of response which might get issues like prostitution debated, with the attendant possibility that eventually we might deal with them in a more reasonable manner.

We shouldn't have crimes on the books which few people take too seriously such that the police generally only react if they need to pad their arrest numbers or there is a specific complaint to which they need to be seen to react. When very publicly in many cases laws are ignored, that promotes disrespect for the law in general.

llporter 07-21-2005 05:03 AM

thaifan99 07-21-2005 02:53 PM

Im sure the legality of it was gone into deeply before they did it...

Pipecrew 07-21-2005 02:56 PM

Every guy has short hair!! it's a sign! haha

crockett 07-21-2005 03:01 PM

Broward county has been doing this or did do it some time ago.. IMO it violates their constitutional rights as they have not been proven guilty in a court of law.

cjaccardi 07-21-2005 07:34 PM

this is before there trial date?? what ever happened to innocent until proven guilty ?? now you expose people who have not been convicted of any crimes in a criminal page??

Thechad 07-21-2005 07:49 PM

I tell you what I will wear t-shirts of diffrent progams or sites and find the sting. Not hard to do the officer stands out like a sore thumb, and yes I have and sometimes still do use them, sometimes you just want some and why use someone for a one nighter this is cheaper quicker and at the end it's nice doing buisness with you. However, I get the mug shot wearing your shirt.
I thought of this a couple years back when I had a stupid drunken party site and I lived in Omaha, NE were they would put offenders on a billboard for a month. The first thing that came to my mind was free advertising on a billboard for a month!

Spunky 07-21-2005 07:53 PM

They are doing something very similar here..very effective

nofx 07-21-2005 08:29 PM

i fucking hate chicago

its a shit hole down

but the wicker park area is very very cool to go walk around at night drunk as fuck

saw some fucked up shit happen and saw a lot of homeless people

pussyluver 07-21-2005 08:30 PM

Can I get my pic up without being arrested? Can I promote my sites?

It's all fucked up. Punishment before due process! Not something the government should be involved with.

To say we send mug shots every day on sorts of crimes doesn't cut it. It's call due process. Someone send these clowns the constitution too.

The arrest and trial are public, it should end there.

PixeLs 07-21-2005 08:31 PM

Fair enough for these offenders.

robfantasy 07-21-2005 08:34 PM
